Radar Detectors

Can anybody tell me what make a good radar detector? Brand, features, etc. There is so much difference in price. Do you get what you pay for?

Ii use the Escort cordless one which is super convenient for using in more than one car and no cord flopping around on the dash. I think its called the Passport.

Seems to work real good.

I was looking at the Escort Passport 8500 x50. It seemed to have gotten a lot of good reviews. I have never even heard of Valentines I will have to check them out.

Depends on what you want to spend. Like others have mentioned, Escort and Valentine are arguably the best 2 out there. I have a Bel I've been using for at least 5 or 6 years and it seems to work well. Paid a couple hundred bucks for the Bel and its saved my bacon numerous times.

That is my exact question, are expensive ones worth the extra money. I would just as soon spend the cash and get a good one, but if a cheap one works just as well why spend the money?

I've got a Valentine One and aren't real impressed. The directional arrows are kinda nice but I think the Escort 9500 is just as good if not better. I have a buddy that has the Escort and it's range is great. Another cool feature on the Escort is the mute button on the plug that goes into your cigarette lighter. It's way more convenient to mute that way. So far I have 2 speeding tickets with it and it's probably only saved me from a couple. The roads I drive are pretty desolate so the cop using his "instant on" kills any chance for the detector to save you.

That's just it. If there isn't any traffic around, you're screwed.

You have to be a "smart" speeder and the detector has to be used as a tool as part of that.

I think it depends on where you plan on using it. The cheaper ones will throw a lot more false alerts in urban areas. I usually shut mine off when I get into the city, because you can't make any time in most of them anyway.

+1 for the Escort 8500.

There is a new one from Escort, with built in GPS, so that wherever it constantly emits a false alarm, (highway, beside a mall that has automatic door openers) you can hit a button and tell it to ignore that location.

I do like the mute button on the cigarette plug. On the Dodge it is right at my knee, and easy to find in the dark.

Been tempted to get a Valentine, but so far so good with this one.

i have two, the valentine and the escort 8500....both are comparable... a slight preference to the escort....but tactics play a huge role in avoiding radar tickets....in heavy traffic, police radar is nearly worthless, because the cops radar can't differentiate between autos in a congested situation...that changes out in the country, where you may be the only one there....i always slow a bit going over a hill crest, around a corner, or other place where they like to hide....even though they have "instant on" radar, there are tactical limitations to its' use...if you are approaching a car head on, and that car fits the profile of a police vehicle, just slow down a bit until you are sure...after a while of using a radar detector, you will understand the range at which they are activated....if you are within 50 yards or so behind another vehicle, it's nearly impossible to get you, and you are warned to slow down if the police activates his radar on the car ahead of you....many variables of course, but get a good detector, and use it without speeding until you get used to what it will do for you and what it won't.....people who buy a detector, put the speed at 20 over the limit and go brain dead until the warning goes off, are going to get a ticket most of the time....i don't speed around neighborhoods, crosssing roads etc.....just common sense, but out in the sagebrush country, i'm usually rollin', and i haven't had a radar ticket in over 30 years...learn careful...:face-icon-small-hap

A little secret, If the officer is using his RADAR properly a RADAR detector just lets you know that you have been caught. They are a huge waste of money IMO. Just drive responsibly and pay attention to your surroundings, that will do more than any RADAR detector.

I always thought a CB on the interstate worked better than a detector. The trucker chatter would let you know the location of every "smokie" in the state. I've never got a ticket from a speed trap. They always used the "instant on" while approaching in on coming traffic. Unless you have traffic ahead your screwed. I'm too lazy to slow down on every rise, corner, tree, barn, and bush. There's a certain amount of accepted risk you take when you really want to make good time. LOL
