Rabbit Ears Snow Conditions

We were up there last Saturday. We found some decent snow but it was thin. It was so warm that the last 1/2 mile of trail and the parking lot (Buff Pass) had basically turned to mud by the time got back. The storms today and tomorrow will have to bring some pretty significant snow in order for use to get out again.

Does anyone have a recommended cabin to rent or other lodging recommendations? Looking at riding some of the areas between Steamboat and Walden the week before X-mas.

Found good snow last Saturday Nov 23. Was pretty surprised at the base that is setting up especially on the northern facing slopes. The trail up is snow covered but getting rough. Still have to be very careful up there still a few landmines sticking out in the thinner areas of snow. It was good snow for the first ride of the season. I will be going back down there next time it snows as it should be good riding.

Stopped in at the Antler Inn in downtown Walden and ate dinner and thought that was a nice place with good food. Im pretty sure they have rooms available as well.

Went up today around Buffalo Pass. Good base. It was warm so snow setting up. Fair snow in the trees and protected meadows. Getting tracked up. Good for this time of year but you have to work to find the good stuff. Watch out for landmines. Trails are rough, rough, rough!

Anywhere in Walden, Kremmling or Steamboat Springs. Steamboat gives you more amenities and is only about 15 minutes from the top

Lodging in Walden, CO

We are staying at North Park Inn & Suites in Walden, Co. The owners are sledders and have made accommodations excellent for snowmobilers. They have a lot of trailer parking, heated shed if you need to work on your sled, etc. The number is 970-723-4271. They also have a website. This is our first time staying in Walden. Small friendly town and very reasonable with lodging, eating and gas. They are not far from the Buffalo Pass parking lot.

Riding today at Buffalo Pass

Well, it is getting packed down. You can find untouched meadows but you have to boondock to get to them. The trails are bad! No grooming until later and it wouldn't pay to groom yet. Need snow. Got pretty warm today and has a heavy crust unless in the trees. Also have to go up fairly high to find powder. Was good for early and first ride. Not gonna ride tomorrow as afraid we won't find much.

We were on buff pass from Thursday to today. Trails were definitely rough. But we easily found great untouched snow all weekend. Great riding all weekend. Landmines are there Yes. But use your head and you can still do anything you want. All in all what more do you want? It's November and there's more snow there than anywhere in the country right now. Get off the trail and ride your sled like it was meant to be

Nov 6- Dec 11, 2013Snowmobiling snow levels and conditions near Steamboat Springs, CO

We've had over 100" of snowfall this season. By Nov 17th we had 60" fall and a base of 2-3 feet with some areas as deep as 5 feet on north facing slopes and in tree areas. However, still some spots where rocks and stumps weren't covered enough as the snow was powder and light and easy to sink through. But lost a bunch of snow over Thanksgiving due to the warm dry temps. However, about 30" of that hundred inches of snow fell since Thanksgiving and we have areas with 3-5 feet of snow/base and due to the melting around Thanksgiving, the bottom layer is icy-solid, but be caution of avalanches due to the 30" of soft powder on top of that ice layer. If you know of anyone looking for a ride-in and out cabin rental with access right out the door to terrain better than rabbit ears with less people check us out. We are 1 hour SW of Steamboat Springs, CO: http://wildskies.com/winter-vacations/snowmobile-vacations/

Enjoy your ride!
