Questions ABS Packs

I want a Escape 30L so bad but I cannot spend that kind of money right now. The backpack costs more than my whole trip out west for a 7 days of riding. I know it is money well spent becaus it will keep me coming back. But right now I cannot spend the $1000. My avalanche beacon is also 6 years old but it still works, should probably at some point upgrade that too. Will have to see how things are next year for spending that kind of money.

Who sells the Snowpulse and is it $1000 as well?

I hear you on the affordability of the abs bags but if you can get the funds to buy it, buy it! You can't put a price on saving your life and if you have kids, spend a minute and think of how bad it would be getting caught in an avy and realizing that you could have bought a bag and dramatically increased your odds for survival. Also, while its easy for me to say get this buy that, unless you are an expert with your old beacon, upgrade...the new ones are soooo much easier to use, and your best friend my one day owe his life to you....

Regards,

Cliff I smell what you are cooking and I totally agree. If I can come up with the money before I go I am definitely going to get one. Had never even seen an area that slid or seen an avalanche in the short time that I have been going out west (7 years) until a couple of years ago. I had a slide chase me down the hill. We were playing on this hill for like 1/2 hour and nothing and I was going up and I noticed ALOT of snow coming down twords me. I was able to out run it and the group was all safe but wow what a rush and that is when I started to cosider and ABS backpack. Unfortunately I just have not been able to come up with the money. My wife agrees with me that I should get one which will make the purchase easier. If I did not have to put a bunch of money into sled from hitting a tree last year I may have been able to get the backpack. It is just a matter of having the money that is all. What about this Snowpulse? Any good? How much? Been trying to find someone here in the states that sells them, Alaska is only place I can find so far.

a good option for affordablility is the new BCA float 30
its around $499 USD i believe

i am still torn on the snowpulse, ABS (escape 15 or vario 15L)
i use a DAKINE Heli Pro right now and its wicked
but its a 20L, cant seem to find a back w external shovel storage and the same or close storage

leaning towards the snowpulse for the HM30, but also leaning towards the ABS because its proven
i dunno......

AFFORABILITY - yes the are pricey - but ask yourself this - would you pay $50/ride to rent one?
it only takes about 8 trips/year to pay for itself in a couple of years
if you get out this much, you CANT NOT afford to get it
i only get out about 2-3 times year, but ride about 7-8 times in those trips
I have a 18 month old daughter and a lovely wife - love them both and coulnt imagine not seeing them every day - if i have to mop the floors at a peep show for the $$ i will

wifey has ok'd the purchase, like mentioned above is making the purchase easier

just need to decide on a pack now......

The 1000.00 plus dollars is hard to swallow but it does make sense for most of us.
It gives you a little more incentive to go and ride.
Just do it!!

I agree. I thought to myself. Would I pay $1000 for my life. and I said yes. I was able to get one thankfully M&M Sports in Alpine, WY were great to deal with over there and hooked me up with an ABS 15 for under $1000. I often think about not just me not being able to see my family but it would be a lot harder on your family then yourself. You'd be gone but your family would stil be there and they would be the ones suffering without you. It's like insurance its a pain in the a$$ paying for but if something bad happens your glad you have it. Kind of like the pack its a pain in the a$$ paying for but it could save your life. I'm glad you have a beacon it pisses me off seing people riding in the backcountry without a beacon not only could they save their life with one but may need it to help save another. I lost two friends last christmas eve. Don't know if you heard about the mt. Logan avalanche last christmas eve. What a horrible thing to happen right before Christmas.

How about this one. When that avalanche chased me down the hill and things settled down I asked who had avalanche beacons. We had hooked up with a group so there was like 8 of us. The response was "yeah I have one" so pretty much everyone in the group had one. But here is the stupid part. At least half of the group that we hooked up with did not even have the beacons turned on. Daaaah. I was like wow I never even thought I would hear that one. But people are people and we do dumb stuff.

$499 BCA Float 30

I have thought about getting an ABS, but have not really looked. I checked it out at the Puyallup Snow Show and then had the opportunity to check out the BCA Float 30 pack. I was sold. Easy to refill from just a scuba tank, felt good on my back, roomy for all my stuff, shovel and probe outside pockets that hold them securely, it deployed very nicely, a tad loud, but who cares. Besides, who makes the best beacon. These guys have done a few years of testing to get this right. Bag supports the head and the sides of your chest. The construction of the bag is solid, too. I pre-ordered mine. They are suppose to be here the beginning of December, and guaranteed by the end of December. There are also some pretty great deals out there to buy the Float Pack, Shovel, Probe, and Beacon for like $800 or $900. I have plenty of beacons, shovels, and probes. The probes have only been used for fun; the beacons are used every ride and only on search for fun; the shovels well, they get used to get my purple $$ eater unstuck, but never me.

I cannot wait to get the pack. I think I am going to get a scuba tank too because I can see myself refilling this regularly to start with as I show it off to everyone. I will need a supply of little o-rings too. That is it for the refill. It is so easy.

You should definitely take a serious look at BCA Float 30.

what you call "tree riding" is not my style, its basically x-crountry sledin to me, much to fast and much to flat...and 27 dudes in a single file line is strange to me, touching someone elese tracks is crazy when you still have some fresh left.....id rather kill fresh all day in a parkinglot then ride in someone elses track

Im not looking to beat anyone up a hill, that stuff is boring.....id rather comb up though tight trees on a very steep climb then come back down and total fear in my eyes...im not sure franklin has much of that, or i have not seen it yet
