Question about 15 wide vs 16 wide.

I was heard through the grape vine that some dudes are switching from the 16" wide to the 15" wide track for more track speed on the doo's. I guess the reason for this is to get more air through the tunnel.

I just bought a new track and I think camo did somthing a little clever. The track is still 16" wide but the paddles are inset a half inch on each side. So the track is still 16" wide but the paddles are like a 15" wide track. I think this might solve that so called problem of the air restriction in the tunnel. My old track did not have this. The paddles were right to the outside of the track. Unless they did this to prevent from rubbing on the bolts on the inside.

Oh, the track is 9103 163x2.5x16x2.86 pitch for an XP.

Let me know what you think....

My first guess would be that they inset those paddles to let more people switch to 16 wide without grinding rivets in the tunnel or trimming the track, ie increasing sales. I am interesed to know if the new track performs as well as the old style. It has always been my suspiscion that one benifit of the wider track was that at the front where it first engages the snow, it is hooking up in more stationary snow instead of the snow that has already begun to move rearward beneath the track further back in the "trench"

Sooooooooooooooo it's not really a 16" wide track!!!!! You just get the extra weight from the outside 1" of rubber. Doesn't make sense to me. I put a 16" wide on my cat 900 (apparently the old style track) and it is incredible.

I don't know the exact physics behind it....but I can't see a 16" wide track moving through a tunnel designed for a 16" track being anymore air restrictive than a 15" track moving through a tunnel designed for a 15" track....

the air thing is a joke, think of all the snow flying around... you think air takes much energy to mover versus tons of snow flying through??

you get more track speed because you have less track on the snow = less traction = more track speed!!

its like why its way easier to do a burnout on a tire thats the same height but skinier!!!

Yeah good points. Thought it was some BS anyway.

But like i said my new track the paddles are inset a bit from the edge. Might be 'cause the bolts or rivets in the tunnel.

Heres a pic of the 'new' Extreme Part # 9103 Hopefully this shows the paddle inset.

You still get the flotation of the 16" wide track, your not 'floating' on your paddle...your 'floating' on the base of the track.

On paper, traction COULD go down some...but in reality i bet its not seen or felt by a human, assuming lug layout and design are the same to previous "Extreme" tracks.

This would make running a 16" on my Nytro a bit simpler...and fit a nicer/cleaner.

I agree. Your still going to get the 16" floatation but with the paddles in like that, it does make for a bit nicer fit inside the tunnel. My old kk900 could have used this set up.

I think the traction should be the same as the old one though......

most XP summits had track rub on both sides of every outside lug....maybe this is a fix?...oh wait a minute, the track itself also rubbed a bit, i just took a box cutter to mine

be a setter of style and just run the inside paddles and let us know how it works still 16 wide right!lol j/k holy chit be easy on me!
