Haven't tried it with just pulling the fuel tank back so I have no idea if that'll work. The last time I pulled the air box out was to check the TPS baseline. I removed the secondary clutch, unbolted the oil tank from the plate (dis not disconnect the oil line though), unbolted the plate and moved it out of the way. I put a rag over the primary clutch and let the oil tank sit on that. I don't recall if I removed the air box or not.
