I would definatly get the primary puller....prior to '07 it could be done without but they can be a bastard even with a puller on '07 and newer.

i woud either buy the tools, or make them. the insructions to make them can be found all over the place. definatly easier with the proper tools, especially the button retainers. i wouldnt use a mallet for the same reason you dont want to use a impact.

the primary can be easily removed without a puller, remove the primary bolt and tip the sled on it's side so the bolt hole is facing up and fill the hole with water. take the primary bolt and wrap yellow (gas line) thread tape around the threads a couple wraps, then thread it into the water filled bolt hole. when it threads into the sliding half it will get tight from the hydraulic effect of the water, hold onto the clutch with one hand and keep tightening the bolt and the primary will pop off. it makes a pretty loud pop....scared me the first time I did it. no impact, no broken pullers.....simply the easiest and most gentle way to remove it IMO.....only thing I use the puller for is separating the halves once the primary is off.

you will need a spring compressor tool to disassemble the secondary, look at some pics of one and build your own, or buy one.

dont need a clutch puller for any of this job
secondary bolt can be loosened off no problem
you will have to build a tool to take it apart - i built mine for $3
all you need is some 1/2" threaded rod, 6 nuts to fit on it and a piece of angle iron
(sorry dont have pics)

primary
put a wratchet strap on the footwell and in one of the holes on the primary, to keep it from spinning when you turn the bolt
once loose, it will just come off (just pull on the primary or tap it w a rubber mallet)

HERE is a link to what I am talking about

really is super easy

I wonder how many guys saying you don't need a puller have actually taken the out half of a TRA7 off......the older TRA's were splined and slid right off relatively easy, on the '07 and newer the 2 halves are a taper fit just like it is to the crank. I would not attempt this without a puller....I'm sure it CAN be done, but why risk a $200 part when a puller is $35. The TRA in the link above is the older splined TRA, those can be pulled apart on the hill...the '07 is different!! JMHO- :beer;

The TRA VII on the '07 doesn't have holes so your trick won't work. Like WB said, the TRAVII is a different animal and DOES require tools - get a puller AND a clutch holder (and button holders while your at it) as you'll be taking her apart a lot (unfortunately that's how it goes with that particular primary).

Have FUN!

where you getting the tools from. I've checked a number of online sources and they don't seem to have them for 07 :( I was able to find button retainers but not holders or pullers for this clutch.

Same puller for all the 800 twins regardless of TRA model. And buy a GOOD puller, not the cheapo's!!
That link to CTpowersports is a good one, I have several of their tools and they work great. :beer;

great thanks, ordered. It seems a few guys sell those same tools but all I could find online is the complete kit, I didn't need the compressor or button retainers.
