Pull rope replacement the easy way?

Searched around and there's plenty of info on what happens when things go wrong but none on how to do it right.

Is there a way to replace the pull rope without having the spring coming undone? :scared: Do I just need to just pull the rope completely before undoing the bolt?

Thank you both for the replies. This will be preventative as it's looking worn and at certain times it takes an otherworldly pull to turn it over (great compression?) top end only has 150 miles on it. I read somewhere it can be helpful to apply full choke on shut down to "over oil" a little for easier restart... Old wives tail? I'm not noticing much difference.

The step by step is exactly what I'm looking for :face-icon-small-hap

Actually choking on shut down washes oil from the cylinders by adding extra fuel. With less oil on the cylinder walls it will pull over easier when very cold.

Thanks, that makes sense. Mines easy enough to pull over cold and when shut down for just a few minutes. It's the in between temps that are hardest to pull, like shut down for 15-30 minutes. Could be I'm just hesitant to pull really hard as I'm afraid of breaking the rope :face-icon-small-dis

If you shut it down with the choke, only do it if your going to leave the sled for a few hours, not days. It will wash the oil off and you could get rust starting.

Dont pull the bolt it's simple I will try to get a video up ASAP but here is what you do...
Cut handel off after tieing a knot in the rope
Pull recoil from the sled
Drill out 2 pop rivets on the side of the recoil holding the retainer plate
Pull rope all the way out and hold it(sometimes a screw driver does the trick)
Cut the rope and pull it out
Feed new rope in to the recoil opening with extra couple feet
Then feed it in to the hole in the wheel(u can do it in two steps and makes it easier via removed plate by turning wheel against tension of the spring to where the holes line up and u have room to feed it)
Let the spring do the work and let it pull the line in. It will stop when the spring runs out of tension.
Re pop rivet the retainer in
Re install the recoil
Re feed the pull rope out to the handle and pull the rope out till you get decent tension.
Tie on handle
Test your fine work
This way u never have to deal with the spring or other issues. I make good money fixing others recoils after they make the mistake of pulling that bolt! Any questions ask away!

If the rope breaks do the same thing only you have to wind up the spring by turning it against spring tension till it stops after removing the broken rope. Watch out this is a finger jammer

Would you consider doing a video of how you do this...I am interested. I have a good rope but I'd like to learn so when the time comes I will be prepared. Thanks!
