Hi. I just picked up a 09 Polaris Shift with 0 miles and 0 hours on it. I have read the manual and have searched for the answer, but cant find it. I need to know what the break-in process is. I want the sled to last a long time and have never owner a brand new sled. I just wanted to know what you guys are doing to break in your new sleds. Thanks:beer;

Usually I go meadow mashing for 100 miles?

But do you do any kind of heat cycles? Do you keep it under a certain RPM?

There are a ton of different opinions on this subject but here is what I do.

Completely warm up the engine before riding.
Ride between 25 and 40 mph Using the ramp up and down method. Not to stay at one rpm for long and gun it every now and then. Stop and let the motor completley cool down about every 10 minutes.
Going through the whole range ensures you break in the top end rpm range and the bottom end as well.

Also: Add extra oil to the first tank. I've heard that petroleum based oil is better for break in. Then go to full synthetic.

The dealer I got it from said they put oil in the fuel. I believe them. It was a smoky bastard getting it off the trailer. They didnt say what they used though. I plan on using all the good stuff cause I want it to last me. I guess Ill have to go find a road to ride next week and do this. I appreciate the help.

The manual says one pint oil for each 5 gallons of fuel for the first tank. Speed not more than 45mph varying throttle positions. Seemed to work for me except my plugs were a little oily (to be expected) but I used them anyway the rest of the first year.

breaking in

warm it up well, ride it hard for 5 minutes, the cylinder pressure from combustion pushes the rings out onto the cylinder thus letting the crosshatch on the cyls. wear on the rings which in turn seats them. after running for 5 minutes let it cool for half hr. then repeat two more times. it will then be ready to ride. letting OFF the throttle has nothing to do with breaking in rings it will only help cool the cyl. after a hard pull.

warm it up good, then hammer down!

varying throttle from WFO to no throttle for first 2-3 miles

then a good mile of WFO!

Im a firm believer if you pansy the break in, it runs like a dog all its life. If you break it in like your raping a dallas cowboy cheerleader, it will run like an animal all its life :D
