problems with my 09 dragon 800

I'm having problems with my sled and the dealership has no clue whats wrong with it. I got a call from the dealer to get a re flash done in January and 40miles later i burned it down so i had them put a top end in it. The fix kit from pms/mtntk. Now it runs like crap. I can not run my sled between 6900 rpms and full throttle or it set a detonation code. That is the only time it does it and it's guaranteed to every time. Maximum rpm i can get out of my sled is now 7950. it's not my fuel. I made sure there was no ethanol and ran several tanks through. My exhaust valve solenoid has been block off and a pink spring install a year ago.

Check the airbox and TB boots....you're getting extra air in there somewhere I think....

Id call pms seeing how you have there kit. They have some real good guys if they cant figure it out on the phone I bet you could take it in there and they would get ya going in no time.

I agree call and talk to Shawn in service at PMS Polaris! Obviously you must have something else still wrong. Shawn is very knowledgable and will steer you down the tight path. good luck and sorry to hear about your trouble.

i called pms and they said to change the mapping to the earliest 08 because when the dealer did the updates on it they left the 09 head on it and i didn't know that until today when pms asked me if they had to change the head when they rebuilt the top end. i hope that fixes it. I'll find out this weekend. thank you guys for all your ideas.

so you burned it down and put the aftermarket top end on it and think its the pistons that did this? good luck it will happen again unless you find the air leak

since your some what of a genius! how about you pick the phone up and call Polaris saying you has a solution to the major problem they are having with there engines always burning down. they all have a air leak!!

ok, so what your saying is that you have a 09 head and PMS wants you to go back to the 08 map??? Or do you have an aftermarket head??? And that is the reason to go back to the 08 Map??

I have a 010. PMS kit on the way. Are you/THEY (PMS) saying that I should run the 08 map? or since I have the 010, I can run the latest April Flash?? I should probably call and find out!... I will. Unless someone can chime it to clear this up.

they recommended that if your running a 09/08 factory head to run the 08 mapping but if you have a 10 head to run the April flash. but it still would be best to call and make sure I'm right or not.

Easy on the guy. PMS is claiming that in fact it is the pistons and short stroke causing the probs.

It would be nice to know why the mapping was changed before the first claimed failure of 40 miles. Was there a runnability problem? Maybe that is why it burned down, something is/was wrong and that symptom has not yet been addressed and is causing the current issue.

I would also put the valves back to stock. The leading performance Polaris guru's don't recommend this.

I would also throw in a couple gallons of race fuel to go with the higher compression head and do some plug checking early and often. Keep watching for the det.

You might also run a few oz's of oil per gallon pre mixed in the tank and do the 'ol oil tank/gas tank top off thing to establish what your oil injection ratio is at the current injection pump setting.

One of our 09 sleds went nearly 1000 miles with the oil pump adjusted way lean from the factory. At full throttle it was getting the linkage stroke on the arm of just over half. I know this wouldn't cause the det. but just another possible ghremlin.

Our piston looked like this. It was a mag side only, with PTO starting to show signs too. 150 miles since and no prob's now that it's running 40:1.

Hope ya get her dialed.

See rajins thread, we pulled his apart yesterday, exact same problem as yours....horrible.

I think many still consider the original 08 mapping to be the best. And that head is definitally necessary for proper performance. Regardless of mapping I wouldn't hesitate to get a Power Commander on there. Don't leave the fuel delivery in the hands of a map that was meant to pass EPA regulations.

What altitude are you at? With the valves capped you may even need to go lighter on the EV springs depending on altitude and pipe setup. I know SLP lists the pink for single pipe 5000ft and higher and yellow for twins 6000ft and higher. I wish I had more opportunity to test some different springs at altitude. It does seem that they need to be lighter in some cases.

Hey Dave, I'm curious who is recommending to keep these under solenoid control? I have talked with numerous engine builders including a couple that work with the snoX team and everyone caps them. One even cuts them shorter so they fully open sooner. Even Joey at BMP said to block them. It is just an emissions thing. I can see that in some cases it can cause a mapping issue by changing the port height thus the fuel requirement. Just different thoughts on it I assume.

i was able to take my snowmobile out this weekend after i got the 08 mapping put on Friday and it runs great! thanks for all your help and posts i got from everyone.
