Primary Clutch Binding

So I take the primary off of my 700 Fusion to change out the spring and find out that the movable sheave is binding. With the spring removed and the cover off the clutch will close to the point you see in the attached pictures easily. It will close all the rest of the way with some extra force, but is binding pretty bad. After it is forced closed, of course it takes just as much force to open it back up. Any ideas what is causing this?

Either something on that point of the shaft, like rust or gunk or something.

Or something hanging the buttons in the tower(s). Usually the wear pattern is for the towers to spread a little bit towards the top, not collapse, but inspect them and see if the buttons are hanging up on something.

My 900 Fusion did the same around 1500 miles. Don't know if it was the bushing or clutch that expanded. Didn't have any gunk or rust or anything binding it up. Is pretty common on the 06 fusions not sure about the switch or rmk's. Best bet is to call indydan and he will have a fix for you. also a good chance to get it balanced by him as well.

Clutch Binding

I had the same problem with my fusion 900 last year. It was so bad that it wouldn't release and would kill the engine at idle with the brakes applied. I tore the clutch apart and found the bushing was the problem. It appears that this bushing isn't metal but some sort of fiber material or maybe kevlar? I used emery cloth and basically enlarge the bushing to the point that the clutch would move freely. It took some time as the bushing was very tight. I don't know if it expanded because of excessive heat or? My sled only had around 500 miles when this happened. It may have been there all along because this was only the second time I rode it. ( bought it used with 425miles)

Sounds like it's time to rebuild your clutch.

Guidoexpress is right, get in contact with Indy Specialties and have Dan give your clutch some TLC. Your crankshaft and belt funds will thank you!

Thanks guys for the good words.

FYI - You cannot sand the I. D. of the fiber bushing to fit. There is a very thin hard surface impregnated on the fiber and if you sand thru that the bushing will wear and over clearance and it will destroy the clutch.

The bore of the sheave itself must be bored or the O.D. of the bushing should be machined down a few thou so the sheave doesn't crush it when its pressed in.

I actually contacted Indy Specialty on the phone yesterday on Dec, 8th shortly before I posted this question. I just was looking to see what everyone else thought. Not sure who it was I spoke to on the phone, but He was very helpful, and I will have the clutch shipped out to him tomorrow. And yes, all of the positive feedback I have seen/heard about his work is what prompted me to call him up.

I'm sure I'll be just as pleased with his work as the rest of you are. Can't wait to get it all back together to see if I can get some of my top end speed back...no wonder I lost about 10mph on the top end!
