Porting Nikasil cylinders

I am wondering if ported Nikasil cylinders have to be replated if the port work opens up the holes large enough to get all of the way through the Nikasil. I am concerned that the Nikasil will flake off if they are not replated. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

If done correctly- no worries.

Its very important to select the right cutter to not be too aggressive to lift the plating when porting. Then equally or more so important to put a very good chamfer on the port edge when done. Myself I usually use an aggressive stone to get thru the plating, a double cut carbide to get the port rooves where I want them, then a fine stone to finish the port rooves and chamfer the window, and finished up with a cratex rubberized abrasive to polish the chamfer.

In the 90's we had nikasil chip off between the tranfers while grinding
once in a while, but with current cyls the nikasil is bonded to the cyl. wall much better.

I grind through the nikasil on every port job with no problems, if its done
right I believe its as reliable as stock.
