Ported Verus Non Ported Tracks

Opinions on this subject, Skidoo is claiming in last Snowest Mag they are not porting there 2011 tracks because after testing the non ported track climbed 100 to 150 feet more every run, I no a ported track is alittle lighter, rolls easier, and less snow in the skid, means less weight and I ran a ported 159x16x2.5Challenger on my Mod 9001M. I just bought a very low mile 2005 Kingcat in excellent shape and also bought a new Power Claw to put on it, I am not sure if I want to port it, any thoughts on the subject, thanks MADDOGWFO

I would say that the benifiets outway the cons in this case. I thinking porting my track was a good idea and definatly noticed the weight savings from the lack of snow build up in the skid. However if you have a high hp sled/turbo sled or do lots of water skipping I wouldn't port.
 
The problem with the doo ported tracks is that they went way to big with the ports. I ported my 174 x 2.5 with 3 1 1/8"holes in the middle and it works great. It deffinetly rolls better than before porting and lost about 5lbs. As far as less snow in skid I would say it is better but not by a huge amount. Deffinetly would NOT try to water skip with it. If you do make sure the water is shallow as you will be retrieveng it from the bottom. Would I do it again? 6 of one half a dozen of the other. Do not think you would be wrong either way. Just don't over do it and use smaller holes and you will be happy.

I agree....Doo just want too far with the size and amount of holes which makes for loss of flotation and lets snow in under SOME snow conditions....a couple 1" holes ONLY in every other pitch (in front of the paddle to allow the paddle to compress snow behind it) allows for snow evacuation without the other drawbacks.
 
as far as those who say you cant water skip.. dont worry, just go faster. I run 2 1 1/8" holes every pitch on my big sled with a 3 pitch track and 3 7/8" holes per pitch on my 2.52 pitch track... keeps a LOT less snow in the skid.

Really? Have you noticed a big difference in spring time conditions, or in the afternoon when our powder starts getting mushy?

Haven't tested the waters yet, think I'll be fine to skip creeks and rivers. Just hold of the open water until I get to test it.

Smallish holes will not let snow inside the skid.. Bigger holes,,,, (doo track) lets to much snow in... Adds more weight.. Most noticeable climbing in soft deep snow. Felkers seems to have it figured out.. The trick,,,,, let snow out,,,, but not in..
 
ported=less weight, lighter, easier to roll onto side to carve, sidehill, etc
non=more floatation, climb higher, more weight due to snow evacuation
 
Ported PC track

153 PC ported with a BDX 1-1/8" tool. One hole in the center of the track every other row/26 holes total. My rails have an anti stab kit so it is limited to holes in the center of the track. IMO

Works great at keeping the skid clean in sticky snow, rolls better and picked up 300 rpms on the top end in the steep & deep with no other mods.

Nothing helps in our heavy wet spring "mashed potatoes"....mild "porting" works best in the fluff IMO....in the spring I just plan on the extra 80lbs of snow :face-icon-small-win

Yes, the Doo tracks are overly ported with big azz holes. One down the center like Polaris is sufficient IMHO. Can notice the difference in floatation, XP doesn't float as well.

i ride a mcxpress turbo apex 270hp, with a ported track on the camo extreme. with 3-1 inch holes accross the center, it works great for me in all conditions,even mashed patato snow...and i do alot of water skipping...and it works just fine,,even in the summer when we ride the lake..i have not seen a sled go down under from a ported track yet..so far...wet clutch or water sucked up the pipe..yes..:present::present:

I would be real careful on water. My buddy has a 2010 summit 146 even though your ports are smaller that thing cant do anything on water. 20 feet or less you might be ok I wouldn't do more than that with it.
 
I like non ported tracks better. You can't go over water safely with a ported track and I really never noticed the ported track was any better at anything in my riding experience. I know the theory behind it sounds good but just never felt or seen a real advantage with ported tracks. If my camo extreme came ported I still would have bought it just don't think it is nessary.
 
All this talk about not being able to roost across a lake w/ported track just doesn't seem right to me.
Yeah, I see the obvious "hole in the track" , but its not like there isn't way more rubber surface that is solid & don't forget all those paddles.
I don't know, If I get a chance to hit the lake w/my ported track Escape I don't think it would sink spinning @ 100 mph !--------Proflow
