ported track?

I did a post a while back summarizing all the disadvantages of a ported track in increasing severity. I went with 2 1 1/8 holes in the center of the track. I used a sharpened hole saw. You know...it does seem to keep the very aft end of the skid clear of snow.

One thing to keep in mind when you decide the size of the hole. Some people are porting 3.0 pitch tracks and some the 2.52...and I don't know the new doo track...so that plays a roll. Obviously the 3.0 pitch tracks can take a larger hole. I would certainl avoid the driver lugs. Weather to port out side the windows, in line with the wheels, in front of paddles vs. behind will be up to your comfort level.

i did mine. to tell you the truth was checking my buddies non ported track sat. versues my ported, both 162's with the challenger. there was no difference, both skids had almost the exact same snow build up where ever we stopped. i did notice that my cooler was getting more snow on it than his was though!!!

I did mine a couple of years ago used a 1 inch hole saw ....did a 3 on one then did 2 on next ....bag weighed about 2 lbs when done ....

when everybody parked I looked around and I had hardly any snow in my skid as others were mostly full ...so there ya go and ...track never cracked or tore my 2 cents

Mine is ported with 3 in the center. Makes is difference in keeping the skid clear on snow. Can feel the difference boondocking. Only downside is do not try to water skip with it. You will sink like a rock!

h2snow do you have any pics?

this is axactly what I did ...not my pic, I just used two pieces of plywood for templates and used c clamps to hold them in place

takes about an hour and a half....or 6 beer :beer;

I was skeptical, but finally did it for kicks. I didn't have NEAR the snow buildup inside the skid, but that is the ONLY difference I saw. Enough of a difference that it convinced my buddies to all do theres!

Did it on my 500. Punched two 1 1/16 holes down the center. After a couple rides I think it was a good idea. You can definitely notice how much easier the track spins. A lot less rotating mass for sure. Just grab a few brews and a hole saw and go at it. Good luck!

less bind also

just got done porting a 162 (third track porting job) their was another track sitting on the same table. When i noticed that the curve that the track makes when laying flat was about two inches higher then the one I was porting. witch means that the track can flex more around tight corners(thats a good thing). I'm running a boosted 900 cat with no fail.

i noticed in h2snow's picture you can see the rear wheel through the port holes, do you feel the wheel running over the holes? dooadew said something about it feeling like wash boards

i've had my finger track ported 5 holes every rib, 2 wheels in the back, never felt the wheels go over the holes, at that time i was running a turbo on the sled

maybe with the outside bogies but not the single one in the middle ..not much weight in there

I did mine.. in a 3-2-3-2-3 pattern down the center and 1 every other one on the outside and used an 1 1/8" bit, definatly noticed the difference in snow loss! That was my first track i did.. it was getting old so i had nothing to lose and i wanted to try it out. Did it mostly for "BLING" Now ill do it on every track i get!!! I also didnt feel any wash board type deal.

P.S. I agree.. DO NOT go over water! :D
