Poachers near pk 4086' and Halibut Tail (Hatcher Pass)

Hi,

I'm not a snowmobiler, just a BC skier.

I was up on Halibut Tail (Hatcher Pass) yesterday and saw a snowmobiler ride up the valley to my west for a bit. I also heard (second-hand) about a party of snowmobilers gaining the 4086' ridge. This is poaching and although it might be fun, it does not do your community any favors.

I know this type of thing can cause a fair amount of tension, so I have used my real name as my login so you can spell it correctly if you care to flame me.

Otherwise, please do not poach the non-motorized terrain!

Hey Scott

Thanks for posting here on Snowest. I agree with you that poaching is not right and gives us (sled heads) a black eye. It is possible that the rider you witnessed was just ignorant of the closed area. As you know a small percent of riders are just outlaws and ride closed areas just to make a point.

At any rate, I would like to apologize for his actions and also applaud you
for posting in a civil manner.

Thanks, MTNSLD

if the skiier side of turnagain opened up it would be so weak. You can get the same terrain on the backside, and if your not 'good' enough to make it over then you wouldn't want the skiier side opened anyway. Leave the freshies on the skiier side for the crews willing to hike it

?

I am not familiar with the Halibut tail or peak 4086'. Where are they? The only closed area that I know of is the Government peak side of the upper parking lot and the South side of the trail over the pass. The lower portion of Archangel on the Right is also closed to snowmo's. These closed areas are posted.

Poaching doesn't do us any favors and I hope the reason was ignorance. With that said, I was recently cussed out and screamed at by a cc skier on archangel trail about a month ago. And that my friend doesn't do you skiers any favors, We had even slowed down to a crawl when we went by the guy.

There are some attitudes that need to get in check because I've been riding that valley for 15 years and have just as much or more right to be there than any of you.

and teh hitman strikes again. granted those two are idiots (akrev and rev440) but come on dude, get over yourself. once in a while you make a good point but always manage to go over the top and look like as big of an idiot as the people you are going after. check the ego bro. anyway...

i agree that poachers are a major issue and i can and do appreciate the civil post and warning by the bc skier. my guess is the poachers didn't realize they were poaching. most everyone that rides up there knows what is closed and considering the nazi b!tch of a ranger no one poaches on purpose. but keep in mind that entire area was open to sledders in the past and was closed with little or no input for the community. sledders are a little sick of the attitude from a good percentage (but not all) of the BC skiers. especially since any new forest plan ALWAYS favors non motorized users no matter how asinine it is. and i do both and have heard it all while hiking turny and other skiing areas. not trying to be an azz just trying to keep it in context. it's not always the sledders don't forget it goes both ways. really i like the setup they have a turny and hatchers seems to work out really well for everyone but my concern is who long before the skiers start trying to close the sledders side of turny because it disrupts their "outdoor experience"

Well put pura vida. I would like the setup at turny better though if the skiers stayed on there side. Many times this year I have seen skiers in main bowl skiing avalanch prone slopes right above parked sledders at the bottom. If thats not enough you have to be on the look out for them ghost riding there sleds down the mountain. Half the time I dont think they even look before they push. About 2 weeks ago we were in main bowl parked and getting ready to go up and into 2nd bowl when we just happen to look up and see a sled ghost riding down right towards us.

Ummm I am a skier, 40 years old, my first mtn sled was a 96 summit. Should I not be allowed on the motorized side because I like to make turns off of my sled? That is a stupid place to ghosty though (widowmaker). I talked to the guys who were doing it, hopefully it won't happen again. No offence, but "just happened to look up" come on dude, don't climb up that without being aware! Exact spot where two great people lost their lives Feb 15th '08.

anyone have a link to show where the open and closed area of hatchers for sledders is? I've seen markers up in some areas with no message posted on them. maybe the park rangers should post these things on the bulliten board at the fee station. Ya think!

Scott,

Thanks for posting your concerns, but you may get farther if you didn't harbor such a negative attitude towards our community. From what I gather from your comment is that you assumed these people ment to poach, which you will never know. Maybe they made an honest mistake. You also assumed that all the hopped up moto heads on here would tear you a new one for posting your opinion, which was obviously a bad assumption.

You should promote a positive attitude by showing your support for both skiing and snowmachining. I think your message should have been that some some snomachiners, whether they ment it or not, where in the worng area, and maybe the people on snowest could make and attempt to make sure our member know where we can and can't go. It's much easier to know where you can ski, because there are no restrictions.

Just a thought,
Garrett

Scott,
I am with the majority of the above. The vast majority of us very much so respect the boundries and rules put upon us. We may not always like it, but abide by them. I really do appreciate you taking the time to going our forum and express your opinion and facts directly to our user group. Rest assured, that most of us police ourselves. I have and will, "remind" someone that they are breaking boundries if and when I see it happen. We all know that this is the quickest way for use to be even more regulated then we already are. I think you can get the feel of this from the responses you have gotten so far here. There is always going to be some punk kid that thinks he is above the law, our the old timer that was here before the laws and nobody can control them. I appoligize for these idiots. We feel the same as you folks if not worse since the give the rest of us such a black eye. Now let's both get out and do what we all like, go play in the snow!

Blah, blah, blah. Poaching is at your own risk. Do it and get caught, pay the fine. There is acres and acres of non-motorized places for skiers to go including tons of ski resorts. Snowmobiles are losing ground daily, so yeah there is going to be more poaching. If you don't like it. Maybe you should try and help us keep some of the land open for riding. Snowmobiling does NO HARM to anything. Its not like they are tearing up the land. After the snow melts you can't tell where any snowmobiles have been.
