Please take the avalanche airbag survey

I agree an AVY pack is added protection. I would also encourage people with packs to be very familiar with it and have your straps adjusted and your handle in a position where you are confident you would be able to deploy the bag if the instance ever occurred. Hindsight is always 20/20 and unfortunately I experienced a slide this season and was unable to reach my handle as I tumbled down the mountain. My instinct was to throttle first and position my sled down and stay with it. The snow decided otherwise. Once separated and tumbling, I couldn't get my hand within 4 inches of the handle. Lesson learned- grab the handle before anything else! I have since made some key changes and adjustments to my pack setup.

Matt,
Funny you should say that, because the exact same thing happened to me. The thing was I ended up getting buried and was fortunate to have some great friends, bail my *** out. It was a smaller hill and I thought I could ride it out, but I was wrong. I did have my hand on the cord when it first broke and could have pulled it, but I hesitated. When I finally figured out (hey this is what I have got this pack for), I got tossed and pinned under my sled. Tough lesson, pull the cord first and ask questions later!
