I was reading my local paper and came across the article of shutting down the western land....here is a comment by a greenie:

"First, there's plenty of places to snowmobile - it doesn't have to be done everywhere. Second, an alternative would be to get off your fat arse, sell your motorhead sled, strap on some cross country skis or snow shoes and really do some winter sports (e.g., "sport" is not sitting on your butt all day pushing a little lever)."

Anybody want to take them riding????

ttt for a topic that should be a sticky...

Signed, got a reply from senator Murray.

Dear Mr. Scheib:

Thank you for contacting my office. I appreciate hearing from you regarding your views on the Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act.

The views of Washingtonians are very important to my work in the U.S. Senate. Please know that I will keep your thoughts in mind and encourage you to be in touch. Do not hesitate to contact me again to express your views on this or any other issue or if I may be of assistance.

I hope all is well in Ellensburg.

I saw that comment in the Star Tribune a few weeks ago also.

TTT -
I added and changed a few things before shipping it off...

Dear Congresswoman Loomis,

As an avid outdoorsman, motorized vehicle recreationist and a registered voter, I am writing you today to voice my opposition to the "Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act” (H.R. 980).

PLEASE OPPOSE THIS LEGISLATION.

If this bill passes, it would represent a fatal blow to the already struggling tourism industry in Wyoming, as well as negatively impact thousands of businesses statewide, and in our neighboring states, that directly or indirectly rely on public access to the lands in question.

In the words of the 1964 Wilderness Act, designated Wilderness is; "an area of undeveloped Federal land retaining its primeval character and influence, without permanent improvements or human habitation, which is protected and managed so as to preserve its natural conditions."

The Wilderness act is a law that was meant to preserve "untouched" areas that still remained in 1964... 45 years ago.

I believe in light of the industrial and technological advancements of the last 45 years, exponentially expanded usage of undesignated areas since 1964, and prerequisites for wilderness classification (including the absence of pre-existing roads, bridges, campgrounds, trails, etc.) many of the proposed lands within this bill are already ineligible for consideration. The bill actually contradicts the intent of the original Wilderness Act, which essentially defines wilderness areas as lands that show little or no signs of “human manipulation”.

I believe any elected official that votes for this bill is illegally using their seat to satisfy the personal wants and beliefs of a select few, whilst ignoring the majority of public lands users – and the law as written.

H.R. 980 would designate 23 million acres of land in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming as Wilderness. This means each of these 23 million acres would be made permanently off-limits to camping, off-highway motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, 4x4s, snowmobiles and mountain bikes. The bill will close all trails and roads in these areas (again, ignoring the rules set forth in 1964, as there is already “human manipulation” present in these areas) to responsible motorized and mechanized access. U.S. Forest Service studies show that less than 4% of total forest visitors use the existing wilderness, and that the demand for motorized recreation is rising (www.fs.fed.us/recreation/programs/nvum, FY 2007 National Summary Report, p. 7).

Most importantly, Congress should honor the established protocol of respecting State and local rights by not imposing wilderness designations on people whose elected Congressional delegation are not in full support of the designations.

You have my voice. Please speak loudly.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this important issue. Again, please oppose H.R. 980.

Thank You
