Places to ride in Cali

Hey, I have to be in California mid march for 2 weeks. Was wondering where the best locations are for sledding. What is the closest to Palm Springs. I don't mind driving a day to get to a nice location.

Palm Springs to Mammoth is 350 miles(7-8 hrs.; more if pulling a trailer). Tahoe area would be another 100 miles further North. What kind of riding are you looking for?

I was thinking of stopping thru there on the way down to Palm Springs. Just throw the sleds on the truck and stay in our travel trailer. Preference to playing in the trees

On the way down from where?

99% of riding is in the Sierra Nevada's.

There are the RUBIES near Elko Nevada.

So March should be pretty set up and ride anywhere snow.

I think you have to buy a OSV sticker from the DMV. Any sled store will have the sticker ... think it is $30.

The closets trails I know is in south Big Bear BUT I don't think there will be much tree riding unless you get there right after a dumping. BUT BUT BUT so will a thousand other people trying to "walk in the forest"

The closet groomed trails from Palm Springs is Kennedy Meadows (Sherman Pass) which is off HWY 395 EAST of China Lake NAS and north east of California City. Can be viewed at http://sugarloafers.com/riding-areas/sherman-pass.html You can park your trailer at the trail head there for days and ride for days with out seeing anyone else. Fuel/food are hours from the trailhead.

Next is www.MammothLakes.com. http://www.mammothweb.com/recreation/usfs/usfs.html again off HWY 395. Most snow is on the west side of HWY 395 . Snowmobile trail maps are available at the Mammoth Lakes Visitors Center on Hwy. 203, as you enter town. No overnight parking in town anywhere but it is a full resort town with all you need movies, sled shops all that stuff. http://mammothrv.com/ is less than 100 yards from the trailhead ... but you cant ride to the trailhead anymore. Most mapped areas are "tracked up" after a storm unless you go with a local to areas in the trees. You can get a speeding ticket on the trail here !!!

There is some good rding near south Lake Tahoe and the further you come north it gets better. Near truckee California with little Truckee summit and then even further there is Yuba Pass and weber lake Area. Lot of trials that lead to good tree riding and then Gold Lake Area You have to keep an eye out for wilderness areas there are a few and every year they grow bigger and bigger =(

Elko is 4 hours east of Reno I-80 It all depends on how far you want to drive i guess.

Dude the Rubbies are like a 14 hour drive. Go to blue lakes unload and have some fun, or ebbets pass has great riding as well.

Depending on where you are coming from Hwy 80/Truckee may be your best bet. Cisco Grove has a place that you can stay at over night and leave from there on the sleds. You can boondock to Castle Peak.
