Piston scoring! How much is to much?

I just recently pulled my jugs off and upon closer inspection I noticed I had some slight scoring on my Mag Piston. I also have a litle bit of flaking on the rings. It is visible just left of the scoring. Everything else looks good. I want to know how much is to much scoring and when do you need to replace the piston and/or rings.

Those aren't bad as far as scuffing goes. The flaking will only get worse though and that will cause a compression loss.

wouldnt be too concerned about it, but i would definitely change the rings and get some light emery cloth or a scotch brite pad and clean up the piston a bit.

double check the cylinder and make sure theirs no scarring in the jug that might be causing it.

That is nothing to get consern of.
It looks like you have been on the very limit, just before it would seice.
And to get it last better with that tuning/long pulls. You can grind off litle on the 4 corners where it seams to hit the cylinders walls and put it in a lathe and grind off 5-10/1000 inch with a 240 paper, from center to the top of the side walls. So it will be more tapered. Then the piston will survive higer temp.

Why screw with it??????? If its apart and your even slightly worried replace the parts!!!! Imagine if it does fail and your buddies knew that they are pulling you out because you were too cheap for new pistons?

That's a good point...

I decided to replace the pistons. Since I'm getting my cylinders ported wy risk messing them up and having to tear the engine in the middle of the season.
