MOMBASA, Kenya - Pirates attacked another U.S.-flagged cargo ship carrying humanitarian aide to Mombassa, Kenya, on Tuesday and the U.S. Navy destroyer Bainbridge was responding to provide the ship protection, NBC News reported.

The Liberty Sun, with approximately 20 American sailors on board, was attacked by pirates in two boats about 300 miles off Mogadishu, Somalia's capital. According to U.S. officials, the pirates opened fire on the ship as it attempted to take evasive action, NBC reported.

"The pirates pretty much shot up the bridge, but no one was hurt," one source told NBC.

How long are they going to let this go on? Killem all!

In this day and age, why would anyone travel through there without a fully armed security force?

Seems a few thousand yards of razor wire wound around the hand rail, and a couple 50 cal sniper rifles with night scopes, are what they need. Or, maybe a rolling airframe missile pack, and a 30mm chain gun. :)

I know there is a lot of people looking for work right now. I'm sure there are a lot of good ol boys who would like to take a boat out and solve our pirate problem

the pirates have vowed to hunt down any american flagged ship and kill all the people on board every chance they get.

Looks like it's time to bomb the **** otta their bases.

Luv the way you think Ollie, But I dont see this administration having the stones to put any of them in their place.

They put 3 of them in their proper place the other day.....

Beat me to it. I have seen so many people say that Obama won't have the balls to do anything yet he just did something about it and hardly anyone acknowledged it.

To those that are saying to put the .50 caliber out front for protection...

It is against International Law for civilian ships/commercial ships to have weapons on them. This is so that there are not ships cruising around attacking other ships pretending to be a commercial shipping company.

What we need to do is basically have an agency (probably worldwide/UN sanctioned) doing what the coast guard does in the U.S.

Checking ships to verify their contents and intentions. If the U.S. does it alone we will be accused of being the "world police". So it would be much better if other countries with large navy's got involved with us. France, Britain, Russia, China (not large but getting there), Japan, there are probably a few other capable of it Navy wise.

Giving your "ok" to do what the navy thinks best to rescue a hostage is one thing. First off, Obama had total deneigability (sp?). If it had all gone south, he just had to say the navy acted wrongly. If they succeed he gets credit.

Going after the pirates is another thing entirely. He doesn't have the ability to blame someone if it goes wrong. Secondly, he ran on a platform of no war. If he goes into somalia after the pirates, he will lose a lot of liberal support and he won't do that.

I think he will send more ships to the area so he looks like he is doing something, but without the right to board ships flying flags of other countries or the ability to bomb their bases or send strike teams after their leaders, nothing will change.

The pirates are using hi-jacked ships to venture far out to see (400-800 miles) then they drop the attack boats off and let them go after a ship they have already been tracking.

YOur kidding right?
The UN is a joke.
They were saying on the news that most ports don't allow weapons, however, those weapons can be secured prior to entering port. By weapons I am talking small arms stuff. That is all that is needed to stop the pirates, they don't have large bore stuff. It's small arms.

Ports don't allow weapons and international law doesn't either. So you are technically asking them to break the law. The law is in place to prevent pirates, clearly it is not working but if you allow weapons there is little you could do to pirates you do catch, since they won't be breaking any laws unless you catch them in the act.

UN might be a joke but it is all we have, so we must work with it. Why not try and improve what we do have going? If the large permanent and VETO members of the UN work on this, all sides benefit except for the pirates of course.

If ships start arming themselves the pirates will just bring large guns to the battle. Lets allow those than know how to fight, do the fighting and keep ships and commercial sailors to what they know how to do (not fight).

Now I am no EXPERT but the EXPERT I was watching on FOX News said ships are unarmed because of local laws & not International laws, Each contry has it's own laws.
Killing the 3 pirates really taught the other pirates a lesson now didnt it?

It was cool our troops did save the captan though, The smart thing to do will be to form a embargo all Somali ports to keep the motherships on shore...... Then maybe it will get bad enuff for the skinnys to give up on their warlords & form a real government.

Back to reality though & we have ships that are passing through the Ardan Straits now with very limited protection:confused:

Logistically we really cannot stop sending ships through there, it is a HUGE shipping lane and we have to do it. Somalia is a mess and we really cannot do a lot about it, we tried once and virtually failed.

I agree that we really need to form some sort of organized patrol in the area to ensure ships travel safely. Because of where it is located there are already many Navy's in the area, which is why I mentioned it should be handled on an International level. Consider it live training.

15% of the world oil travels through there, How long will it be before oil prices jump? Who will protect the U.S. sailors on ships right now heading there? The skinnies are going to kill the next group of americans they find!!!!!!!
We are a week into this & still no motherships have been sunk, This did not just start but we think of ourselves as the greatest super power in the world? Obama wanted the glory of a rescue & got it, I still say if he (obama) had the stones the second U.S. ship would not have been attacked or the pirates would have been destroyed instead of getting away.

I seen this before & his name was Jimmy Carter!

you say that now, but why were you not speaking up when this was happening when Bush was in office. These Pirate attacks are nothing new, they have been going on for years.

I agree something must be done, and we have just seen some great actions, but in order to not be labeled world police we really need to go about this using our Navy along with other countries that are in the area. On top of that the U.S. should not be the lone one footing the bill.
