BUT the statement that getting higher certifications makes you a better pilot is where I dis-agreed.

That is an ignorant statement and you know it. I'm not even sure it warrants a response.

Any learning, training, or education will ALWAYS improve you...always.

Himark, I've had a lot of respect for you over the years, but you're just about to lose it. You are turning into that ultralight pilot.

Do you even have your ppl? "lots of hours in GA planes" doesn't count. Have you taken the checkride?
 
How many "I'm highly trained and certified pilots" do you run into?
Surprisingly quite a few..Heck just 2 weeks ago me and a CFI friend of mine stopped into a local airport where the FBO had to make a point of telling him what a great pilot he is.

Funny you should mention this one, He had just got his IFR rating the week before then piles it in during weather.



To me being IFR is like carring a beacon

Yes I doo.. I also have a BFI which was prior to the LSA rule change but had to take the same FAA exam Fundamentals of Instructing.

Im not arguing pilot in the sense of commuting etc. Im talking Basic flight to address the question of the guy that said "do I need my pilots license to fly these" This is where it was indicated he should skip the LSA and go straight for a IFR rating so he would be a "better pilot"

No, he WAS NOT IFR rated. Do your research before you post.

I hate citing wiki, but whatever. It's the truth...very broadly covered in safety classes at the leading flight school in the country.

completely invalid argument. One is a tool that you take with you, like having a GPS in a plane. No, it doesn't make me a better pilot. The other is the knowledge and skills needed to make decisions and handle a situation competently...like taking avy courses.

Skipping LSA and going for PPL/IA would make him a better pilot. More hours in the air, more time spent learning about things like aerodynamics and weather, more time spent making mistakes with someone more competent next to him at the controls.

I was going from memory and if memory serves right he was right on top of the IFR cert but maybe had not got it yet. I couldnt remember if he had just got it or was just short of getting it.
