P-85, shimming spider??

Ok so everyone says to shim spider for correct side clearance on your clutch/belt. I know about engagement with small vs. big clearance.

But what about the position of the weight?

If you bought a cover with a side-clearance adjustment you could get your tight fit without shimming the spider any different, and the weights position would be different for say 1:1 ratio vs. a re-shimmed clutch.

Any thoughts on what works better in the steep and deep??

I pullled one .20" factory shim and left a shim (largest) in the spyder. This left about .10"-15" clearance to the belt. Also installed the 911 adjustable cover and had the entire assembly re-ballanced.

Only had to adjusted it once or twice in 400 miles with very good results.

Would recommend installing the adjustable cover since it worked as advertised.

Years ago SLP sold a thick washer with set bolts in it. The clutch bolt went through it and by screwing the set bolts in it changed the clearance on the belt I used to have several of them, don't know where they went and haven't seen one for years, but they worked pretty good.

When we service a clutch "if" there is extra shims in them we use them to adjust the clearance. If there is no extra shims, we remove a small amount from the fixed side of the clutch on the lathe. This can be done at the yearly service. Be careful of adding bolts and adjusters to your clutch. Only a very small amount of change can put you way out of balance.
