ORR Creek

Had a good ride with 6"-8" of new up high, on top of spring ike snow. The parking lot is pretty bare but the road has no bare patches... first couple miles are a sheet of ice.

The trails/ roads were in great shape but I would recomend some scratchers, I don't have them yet and I got hot on the ride down a couple times.

Off trail is good if you know the areas to ride. Here is a shot from the bottom of top sail ( just above the old forest service cabin ). Notice the bare patch in the lower right. Looking at Mt Adams.

Nope but you should have a good time. depending on the ages and skill level I would head up and take a right at the four way intersection towards takalak lake... lot's of eazy riding out there.

And to the club that poured the slab in the warming shack... Two humbs up. That was a well thought out upgrade with the four-thought to put a stomp off spot to keep the floors some what dry. We spent a few hours in there sunday because our group got split up and we were waiting for the stragglers. We did notice that the shack is in need of a new stove pipe and I was wondering if a non club member can donate to a project like that?

I'm not much of one to join a club but I will be happy to help with the work/funding it takes to keep these kinds of things in good condition since I do use them.

We were just up there for four days last week.......put on over 250 miles. I love Orr Creek. We come in at Johnson Creek and ride over. So much to ride. Grooming however not even close. Maybe with all this new snow the groomer will actually groom. It was beautiful last Sunday. It has been nice as for people who are wanting to high mark there is not enough snow so we have had the park to ourselves at times.

Rode Orr Creek yestrerday. It was thin down below when we started but was dumping by the time we came out. It was our first time there so spent most of the time trying to figure out where we were and looking for spots to go off trail. All in all it was a good ride and we are going to go back and try again.

As for the grooming... Looking at the latest grooming report it says;
12/21: Trails are not being groomed due to lack of snow.

I have never run a groomer and don't claim to be an expert but there seems to be plenty of snow for grooming up top and that was before last night's dumping. How ironic that up by Baby Shoe pass we came around the corner and found a broken down groomer planted in the middle of the trail. Maybe the report should say "lack of parts" and not lack of snow. :face-icon-small-sho

I said it earlier in this post and Ill say it again...I have no idea who Northwest Trail Grooming is, but they suck!

Ever since they have had the contract up there they never groom in a timely manner.

Web updates?? Forget about it! They never update except to maybe tell you its done on Mondays and Thursdays.

Ive complained several times politely to the forest service and thats gotten me no where either.

I guess it must be hard to find anyone to contract with?

We've finally learned not to try relying on their grooming report...we just go and hope for the best, unfortunately.

If anybody has suggestions..Im all ears.

Is it stiil the company that parks the groomer on a trailer at Peters' old truck shop? Back when I lived in Packwood, I almost never saw that cat anywhere but at the shop, even during grooming hours.

Grooming and plowing are separate operations. Looking at the web site here is the latest,

1/16: Groomed 1/13, will groom when equipment allows.

Maybe with luck the equipment will "allow" them to groom before this weekend. I hope they ask nice and say please.

If anybody is heading up this weekend and knows the area, let me know if you wouldn't mind being a guide and showing us around.

Dont think we'll be going up this weekend since we spent all last weekend in Leavenworth area riding our butts off...but, we do indeed like going up there often and we'd love to show you around the area sometime if youd like.

I grew up in those hills camping and fishing so I know em pretty well.

Rode up there yesterday, it was DEEP !!, snow was awsome when we took off but by the time we got up the road a few miles it started getting HEAVY. It was handle bar deep mashed potatoes. Fun ride but there were more than a few shovel deployments needed to get threw the day. We ended up with rain at and above 5,000'

The road is good ... most of the way ... it should get better if the plow driver get's up there. My brother in-law had to pay to have the road plowed to the intersection aprox 2 miles below the park just so his crews can get in there to finish processing the timber on the ground.

tek9tim ... that may be the groomer being used but it is not run by the same group. Mark Matchet is "northwest grooming". When it sat behind peters shop I believe it was owned by the local club. Yes the groomer that was busted in the trail was his. I was told it was going from an almost reliable source. We tryed to go verify that it was out but we were running low of fuel after just around 40 miles of riding.
