On the cheap

it seems like all the 450's work pretty damn good, the fi bikes do seem to run cleaner on the really deep days, but i know plenty of guys that have carbed bikes that work awesome, i thin the main thing is just find one you can afford and ride the piss out of it!

I agree to that!! When I was hunting for a bike I was torn on what to get. I wanted the button so I ended up getting a 2010 KTM SXF 450 which is carbed, put in a jet kit, gutted the airbox and did a pod filter. It runs great!! I have been in several DEEP pow days and besides having to knock snow away from the filter from time to time, which everyone had to do no matter what they were riding, it has run very well !

the 450 motocross bikes are the way to go bang for buck, the enduro bikes offer some creature comforts like estart, heated grips, etc. but from what i have seen the higher revving motors and closer trans ratios of a 450 mx'er are where its at. my 08 YZ will outpull my buddies 12 FI uncorked WR any day of the week

I haven't seen it yet. You can always throw in another downhill turn and you are over the top.

The way you guys talk about the long tracks sucking, I think you need to come for a ride with our crew. We've converted every ST in the group to LT's, and we wouldn't switch them back for anything. Do you not ride in powder? We've had ST's and LT's out on the same day in the same conditions, with the same riders, and riding a LT is simply easy on the bike, the rider and gets you to more places. A LT does not do anything worse than a short track. I'll put my money on that.

I never said anything about the LT sucking. I said it was condition dependent. If my buddies love it in the spring as much as they do in the powder then I will be long tracking mine out this fall. All I said was I am on the fence until I see more.

HMMM

i rode a long long track this weekend back to back with my ST, both on carb'd 450's. weve got a really solid base right now with just a foot or so of fresh so it prob wasnt a god day for a comparison. i was surprised that the LT didn't rob as much power as everyone says, we rode a lot of tight trees and the st is definately a little easier to maneuver when the going is super tight. the lt seems like it pushes the ski a little more in the corners. you really cant go wrong, they are all so fun, getting out there and riding them is way more fun then debating which one is best, and the only way to find out which is right for you.

For those that weigh 250lb + and will be riding powder often, they will likely be happier on the LT (more floatation). I weigh 160lb and love the increased performance on the LT in the powder and steep climbs. Doesn't seem to take any more power than my ST kit did.

I would not be afraid to get a carbed bike. They work great even when the motor can't reach full operating temp. FI bikes that struggle to reach full operating temp (due to lack of a thermostat), tend to run rich and dump a lot of fuel into the crankcase.

Okay so I am that fat guy, 250 lbs so I am thinking LT now and just need to buy a dam bike. Still have not heard on that 511 yet. If I can't get that I'll just buy a older 450f of any make I can find. I know I had the firsts year of the yz250f and I sold it simply becuase it was a bitch to start so I need to be careful that whatever I get starts easy.

Maybe consider the Husaberg 570. Good bike with a lot of power & E-start. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a back up kick start.

I think I found a bike. I found a 2010 yz450f it's a bit spendy @ 6k but it has a ton of aftermarket stuff already like it's street legal and has a bigger stater and hand warmers ect. Kinda a ready to go bike. I certainly want something plated so I can get a full years use.
Looks like it has new forks, fox rear shock, excel rims new exhaust. I am going to guess 4-5k in upgrades.

010 fi yam

spend a lot of time riding deep stuff with my pal on his st fi 010 yzf, sno ingestion was a minimal problem, did have to clean out the air intake a couple of times, but we were riding stuff that had sent the 162 sleds home, stupid stuff, really like the spring riding now better. when the fluff is at your elbows all day, bike toooo covered with snow to hang on to anything, good day to go home and wait for it to settle a little.

Well I got it. I was wrong about the bigger stater and hand warmers it's got a ballistic battery that runs the tail light and blinkers have to recharge it once in a while. Headlamp does run off bike power.
I was super set on a e start bike but I started this bike with one kick in my tennis shoes so I decided to go for it. ended up getting it for 5800.00 about 2 k more than I had budgeted but the bike has so much money in extras I picked my balls off the floor and went for it :D

My Budget Build

2004 CRF450 w/Athena big bore kit, new hot rods crank/All new Top and Bottom end. Traded a 19 year old kit a XBOX 360 for the bike. He did the rebuild and never rode it afterwards. Bike has zero miles since the build

Upgrades I added:
Polisport plastic kit. Newer 2009 front fendor/number plate & factory effects graphics kit
MRD full exhaust. Work of art!!
El cheapo radiator hose kit from ebay
Complete carb rebuild. done myself. Replaced all orings, new slide, new hot start, corrected jetting.
Renthal fat bars
EE handguars
New SDG seat off ebay.

Installing 2011 TS St kit which I'm buying used this week. Kit has new side cover/ side plates and all new bearings. Tracks in great shape. Will post additional pics once we get the kit installed.

I ride a 12' 500xc-w w/ a short track and i do notice that the gearing seams to have its gaps. however the raw power and tq of the 500 does nicely. Im also planning on a turbo, porting the head and a better pipe.

the only time the bike seams to struggle is in the sugary stuff. other than that is a tractor!

I also really like the E-Start. say what you will its awesome to just hit a button and go! I say the FI is a must!

Im also running a Rekluse. So cool on the snow bike!

all the advantages of a sled with out the weight!!
