Lets discuss the oiless turbo options. I dont know that much about these turbo's other than they spooll up quickly and are expensive.
1. Are they worth the extra $$ ?
2. Are they proven ?
3. Is there tuning that would need to be changed ?
4. Who is running them now?
5. I assume you still need to cool them with coolant ?
6. What would be the cost comparison ?
7. Comparing Turbo's vs Costs?
My take.
1. Yes, much more convinient and cleaner having no tank, pump, wiring, leaky caps etc...
2. Built correctly they will outlast the life of the sled, we dont work these turbos hard on our two strokes at low boost.
3. Apples to apples, no. But you are getting in to newer/better technolgy, lets use garret for example and there oiled line, it is older technology, but they are on top finacially so im sure they dont care.
4. Me
5. Yes water cooled, typically larger coolant passages than a standard oiled.
6. Honestly i dont think cost are far apart. You need to keep in mind you are only looking at turbo sticker price and ignoring the pump and tank which get stuffed into the kit price. take a $1200 dollar gtx without housing, add a standard garret turbine housing $200. Actautor $100. Add an oil pump $150. Pay someone to tig up and oil tank $100. Your $1600-1700 ish.
7. Seeing how much most people get tied up into these turbo sleds, a few hundred either way is well worth going to the self lubed turbo.
One of the downfalls though is replacement parts are not in every turbo shop in town like a garret would be.
As far as i know you have Powderlites, Comp, Aerocharger, and KPA in the game. My choice is Powderlites.
