Off To Canada...To Work....

So after three weeks of paving...we have been on a huge learning curve as the Canadaians use a soft pavement mix, and the pit we are in has soft rock, resulting in a very " tender mix " We are use to superpave ...larger rock and a harder oil. But we are on the right track now. The peple up here are sure nice, havent had much time to cruse the local pubs. And cant seem to find any laborers to work :confused: I am at home for the next two weeks for our sons wedding and the 1st and the 4th being holidays for each country...Dino

I remember the engineering company I worked for trying a few Superpave mixes in the 90's....they definately looked different going down. Where are you working?

Granum , north to Clairshome, Hwy 2 , forgive my spelling, Yes Canada dosent like Superpave which is good I think. Way spendy, way hard to repair, very very diffacult to lay down. I wish Montana would see the :light: When this is done its up to Calgary for the rest of the season. Took some hefty deducts on compaction at first but we seem to be getting our poop in a group :rolleyes: Very differant the way the Canada gov. works, here in Mt we have state inspectors watching every thing we doo. Canada has conslutants which take up too three days to let ya know results from core samples, at home its the next morning. But being a paving comp. we are supposed to know what we are dooing :o Dino

That's why contractors hire QA people. The owners/countys hire the engineering companies and they run QC testing for payment. QA guys test while you run....usually only an hour or two behind the paver so mixes can be adjusted THAT day, minimizing penalty.

Unfortunatly, the way our economy had been doing, you will find it hard to find good laborers unless they are farm kids. Most here in Alberta don't want to work for their money, figure it should all be given to them, and that manual labor is beneath them.

Good luck though with the paving. My brother works for a paver and they do their own in house-QC. Even still, they end up with penalties time to time.

Our prime hired the QA testers...but they said they work for the prime and not us :face-icon-small-con So pretty damn quick we will invest in our own lab and doo our own coreing, testing and will leave the prime and there engineering firm in the dust. Of course we still have to answer to the engineering firm that reps the Alberta hwy peeps. It takes the primes tester firm two or three days to give us the results from the cores. Way lame by our standards to be that far behind our laydown crew. And yes we picked up one farm boy as a laborer...damn hard working young man, just need one more...Dino

Just finished our second job...went a bit better on compaction , and we had way fewer repairs to make :face-icon-small-hap But still struggleing to find laborers and roller hands. At this point in the season if your worth your salt you are working somewhere ;) Our last job is just east of Calgary on hyw. 9 should be a hoot. Dino

I hear ya!funny thing, my company builds bridges all over the place. we use tools built by companies that have been at it since concrete was invented......yet for some reason, montana has to be special........the inspectors always seem to be baffled by the bidwell, but they love to quote a procedure:beer;
