haven't read everyones posts or the article fully yet, but....

If we are driving less, thus cutting back gas tax revenue for roads, why would we need to raise the tax?

The gas tax supposed to be used for repairing roads that are driven on and worn out...if you drive more the road needs repairs faster, but the tax revenue goes up with need...so if we are driving less, theoritically the roads will not be in need of repair as soon, thus when the roads are in need, the tax revenue will be there.

Sounds to me like the gov and Big Labor are just looking for more easy money to take from me.

A bill that let federal transit money be used to build hangers at airports to STORE BICYCLES!!!! That's right a place to store bikes at the airport. Guess what, one was built in his home town airport in northern MN to the tune of like 100 grand!!! And guess what else, Rep Oberstar likes to ride bicylces....I would wager not many people on the Iron Range ride bikes for fun or to work, let alone ride one to the airport when going on vacation.

Why can't the government do what businesses and families do when things get too expensive?0mm I asked my state leg guy that question and he had no good answer...just stumbled over how the budget debt forecasting says that they can. I told him , "hell I can take a loan against my house to buy chit I don't need. But I don't because it's not the smart thing to do."

The only reason the money coming in has slowed is that it hasn't kept up to increased spending (the war, domestic feel good programs, ect-government has a hard time understanding that the main job is to provide the needed things like infastructure(roads), safety, etc. All the other things are nice, but that's it. It seems once you get elected you forget how to have sensible priorities.

XC great idea on cutting all energy handouts...only then will the true best options come forth and beat the chit outta all the other options...nuclear would take solar and wind in about 5 seconds...gas vs others may take awhile but WE would win in the end.

Oh and I guess I would have to agree that Obama makes slightly more sense then McCain on this. Holiday nothing...course I would probably drive like a mofo while the tax was on break.

What has failed to be mentioned here, is the fact that it is the DEMOCRATS that want to raise the gas tax. The federal highway transportation fund had over a 10 billion dollar surplus just 3 short years ago. Hmm, wonder who it is that wants to keep the prices high.
