have read alot about the need for an electrical resistor (or not) for a headlight delete on a 07 and newer m-series but can't find a solid answer. can someone tell me if I will need one to not run my headlights on my 08 m1000. possibly delete stock gauge too, any thoughts? I just got my new carbon fibre hood from C3 powersports and don't really want to destroy it's beauty with the stock gauge.

Funny how every time one of these threads comes up you get two guys who say " I think you need one" although they haven't looked into it & aren't really sure.

Just like black cloud said.
07 & newer NO you DO NOT need one.

06 & older YES you DO need one.

I have not a had a set of lights (of any kind) on a sled in 3 years now & I run with my hood off in the spring rather often. The issue they had with the 05-06 sleds was fixed with the addition of the CCU in the 07's & has not returned.

The ECU is not an issue on the 07+ but the lack of current draw on the stator is.

Explain please?

I have over 5000 miles without lights & not a single issue (I have a lead dog light if I need it btw, better than a headlight, it points where you want to go.)

I've had the opposite experience, 1000 miles on an 08 M1000 and a bad stator. Talked to the race teams about it and they say they have the same issues frequently b/c they don't run lights. Talked to Dale Cutler about it and he said he feels the lack of current draw is detrimental to the life of the stator. I'd rather run a $60 resistor than chance buying an $800 stator. I've been down that road and it sucks.

EDIT: We were not running a tail light on this 08 M1000 either.

Allright, I'll give you that. Odd that I haven't run across it though, I ride with a LOT of light-less guys around here.

how much does one of those resistors weigh????:D

hi
so if you are not running headlights and a head unit( ie speedo ) there is a chance that it could spike the system but i have only seen it once and that is because the guy who owns the sled let the hood wireing short and melt on the pipe

07 and newer should not need it but it is a saftey if you want to run it

06 and older without the ccu need it

hope this helps

It can't weight much, I would guess a few oz.s. I think there are a lot of variables involved though. I think turbos don't have as many issues because of the increased draw of the oil pumps, gauges, larger fuel pumps, etc. The same maybe true on a mod sled if someone is running efi boxes and a/f or EGTs although EGT's and piggy back controllers use almost no power. An a/f gauge pulls quite a bit of power though, especially when it powers up, something like 13 amps at start up.

resistor

Piaa lights with dual Koso's eat my current...can always wire in some electric gonch and some electric socks to eat some more. I heard you just cant mount the resistor anywhere as it will melt its way to Africa if you attach it to some plastic...

SC

i ran my 07 M8 all last year with no lights, i have a small light i've mounted on the hood but only use it when it gets dark. put 1500 miles on last year...

I have thought about doing a headlight delete too, but after reading all of this, why not pack one less sandwhich and keep your headlights?

when they make a sandwich that will help vent my sled then i'll put my headlights back in. i wonder what kind of bread they'd use???:)

I am confused. Everything runs through the regulator/rectifier anyway. So where does the spike come from? When we race prep Ducati road race bikes we pull all the lights and anything else including fans. The only elctrical part left is the gauge. From my expierience I dont see how it would have any effect on the stator. Someone explain.

#1 I don't know anyone who carries a 3+ lb sandwich
#2 like sandman said, you wouldn't believe the difference when you run a mesh screen where the lights are, the heat issue nearly non-existent after that.

Like Duc 84 said I just don't understand how running less junk hurts the stator (I don't doubt it, just don't understand it)

I was joking about the weight of the resitor, they're about as light as $97.50 worth of TI bolts!! If onlyI took my weight loss as seriously as the sled, then that thing would really climb!!!

btw, anybody that poopoos the work it takes to make a seriously light sled should ride a sled with the same HP, but 50-60lbs less, it changes everything IMO.

kaleb is right, you don't loss weight on a sled 20 pounds at a time. a few pounds here, a couple there, it all adds up. been thinking about that sandwich, must come with swiss cheese:)
