Nytro Oil tank cracked

I found a small leak at the base of my Nytro Oil tank. Right where the bottom oil pipe is bolted on. Its not at the gasket but above where the round part meets the base of the tank. This does not look like aluminum it looks like magnesium, not sure can this be welded? This tank lists for $437 :eek:. It looks like it was hit or dropped at one time the oil pipe is bent up and the tank is dented a bit. Where else are these leaking?

Do a search on this there are tons of posts on the tank cracking even last year guys were havin the issue... I got towed out of Renshaw a couple weeks ago,, some JB-weld and back in buisness.. Tank is cast aluminum paper thin I was scared to tig it so did the JB instead its holding up well

Dropped the tank down at a local welding shop, (Charchan Welding) it will be ready for pick up on tuesday afternoon. The cost to replace was over $400.00

sucks the tank broke but casey the owner of charchun welding is an awsome sledder and im sure will get you back on the snow . my oil tank mounts were broke and he helped me out it as well

So far they have been great to deal with and 1 day turn around.

And the bottom of the tank seemed to of been hit or dropped as it was dented in a bit. Possibly a stump or somthing, but I dont see any marks on the bottom of the sled so Im not positive what caused it.

cracked oil tank

My oil tank cracked a month ago on my 08 nytro with 1300 miles and Yamaha covered it.

I will be curious to see if indeed you can weld on the tanks?? I have seen a bunch of good welders try on a couple of tanks and they have a hard time.. You have to use a special low temp rod.. Good luck.. I am on my third tank on a 08 Nytro and Yamaha is still covering mine:):beer;

I welded the tank on my 07 Apex mnt with 1/8" rod with no issues, its all I had on hand 0.045 would have been preferred. I used a miller syncrowave 300 with 3/32" red tungsten balled, real low amps as the tanks are paper thin aluminum. I just got the rod close enough to the arc, to melt it not the puddle melting it (like normally would be the right way). Welded up no problems, not my prettiest work but its not leaking.
Find a weld shop with a good tig machine and it can be done.

Search is your friend...several threads on this.

The tank are weldable, but replacing will not solve the problem...the new tank will crack eventually. If it cracks bad enough, it could leave you stranded.

Get the weak area welded up and have them add some extra material for strength. Also, add a stiffener plate to the mount tabs (again, search is your friend...it's all been covered in other threads).

I have welded 4 of these tanks for different people now. They are REAL thin, turn the machine way down and use the smallest rod you can like the other guy said.

this could be caused by careless forklift driving and lifting!!! if forks lift in wrong spot bellypan can come up and hit fitting on bottom of oil tank. Lot of shops just stab the forks into your sled and lift with no concern.

Also....these nytro oil tanks are definetely thinner than the apex/rx1 oil tank!

I had Charchun Welding in Edmonton do this for me. They welded the bottom where both blocks were seamed to the tank, they were both cracked. They did a good job. Did say it was tough to weld, very light aluminum.

Oil Tank

These tanks dont look welded to me. They look like they are pressed or molded together. I have 3 sleds with this problem. Yamaha needs to look into this. All sleds have less then 500 miles on them. Seemes to be a problem on the 08 models. Welding will be tough. The metal is contaminated with oil. Tough to get a good clean weld to penatrate.

Lipehimer Yamaha is helping me out with a "Factory Recall" I hope???

these tanks suck to weld foresure . im looking at making a roll cage for them . any one have any ideas or featres they'd like to see?

Clean out the tanks with acetone alot. Let dry, acetone evaporates very quickly, blow some air thru the tank, REPEAT. Tape off all the holes in the tank and purge with Argon about 10 min at 15psi, weld should have no problem with oil, you could also preheat the area with a torch to burn of anything that might be left.
Or just take the tank to a professional welding shop.
