Nytro Chain Grenade

this is how my day started off yesterday. i was behind the guys about an hour trying to catch up. 6 miles from the truck, got off the gas going into a berm, rolled the power back in and SNAP. that was that. seemed like my chain was too loose and flexed or bowed.

i've got another question...i'm running my boondocker turbo, the big one, at 15lbs with straight sunoco c-10. about how much horsepower is that (ball park). i've never dynoed it...just curious. i'm thinking about dialing it down to 12lbs and doing mix.

also, i just learned about the recalled oil tank in the 2008 nytros...never got that memo and my tank is leaking at the 90 degree hose fitting at the bottom of the tank. guess i gotta fix that too...

here's a couple of pics of my fun yesterday...

chains

That sucks, hope inside casting is ok .

When I was cookin on trail yesterday I didn't like the slack in my chain . Tightened it twice but didn't seem to make a big difference.

what are the specs on tightening these chains .

Hangtime

the book says loosen the lock nut, and hand tighten, then back off 1/4 turn (i think).

talked to a big-horsepower sled rider and excellent tuner friend yesterday and he said he hand-tightens as much as he can, then turns the track by hand (tunnel lifted of course), tightens again, turns the track and tightens again.

it makes sense that the chain should be super-tight with the turbo yankin' on it all the time.

Are the oil tanks recalled for sure? mine leaked all the oil out last weekend, had to get doubled out 20 km to get a new one, it did look dented though. Funny my dealer didn't mention a recall.

dan bush told me about it last night. my dealer didn't mention it either. funny how that works.

Is it a "recall" or suggested repair? They pay vs. you pay in that scenario. Sorry to hear about the chain dude. :( That sucks azz. After messing with suspension on a ride into Boulder last year, I wound up behind everyone I was stuck on the trail all day with a Diamond Drive issue on a turbo. BORING.....

IMO, the chain scenario is a weak link on the Nytro. And as far as HAND TIGHT is concerned, my bolt is always hand tight, until I add a tiny bit of wrench pressure and it magically loosens up more. So maybe some threads/bolt tolerances are a little tighter than others ? Glad to see you got out OK.

Chain Case

I will be double checking all of ours. We need to talk to Dustin @ Outlaw. See what he says. Jlowe lets send him a PM. Let me know what you here.

chain

My chain broke as well on my trx.Just had the case apart to check it out
at the beginning of the season.Tightened the chain hand tight.Rode a couple of miles and snap.Exploded the belt took the case and chain:confused:
Put it back together and hand tightened the bolt with the chain case off
chain seemed very tight.

just got off the phone with mr. bush again...he clarified that the nytro oil tank was NOT a factory recall but a suggested repair. my bad.

some dealers are replacing it at their cost, some are not. i looked it up and its about 200 bucks for the tank assembly.

on the nytro chain...i guess if you're running a turbo, you better make sure that sucker is tight. i'll be checking it a lot more now...and adjusting.

Carry Water Weld with you. If you notice your losing oil from the can, you can drain most of it into a water bottle, get the sled on it's side and temporarily seal it with WW. Because of the oil seepage, WW won't completely seal the leak, but it got me off the mountain last year without having to be towed.

i was just out looking at the damage and my oil tank is really dripping at the 90 elbow on the bottom of the tank. i guess the metal there is really thin on these '08 tanks. i'm glad i found this out now and not 40 miles from the truck.

Jeff... call me if you don't get your dealer to take care of you. Juli's Nytro had the same issue with the oil tank last year and my dealer covered it under warranty. I don't think they've done anything to update it though... looked like the same tank to me.

Chain case/Oil tank

Sorry to hear about your chain, i have my oil tank powder coated and there is no leaks, would be a lot cheaper then a $200.00 bill at the dealer. Just an idea for everyone. i hated the way the oil tank looked with all that sh!t from the disc brake. Now i just grab a rag giver a wipe and it looks like new.:D

You say you have the big turbo from BD.? the 2871? If so why would you want to turn it down? Ballpark HP 15#'s 15 x 8hp per # = 120hp + 130 stock hp = 250ish total HP.. Sorry to here about your chain, I'll be checking mine a little more often.

LOL...yeah, sean at WCS...said the same thing. actually he said, "you ain't turnin' sh!t down"...:) 250ish is what we were guessing. i LOVE the power, i just have to keep on eye on things more i suppose!

btw...it's GREAT to have a custom sled shop with awesome service. sean ashbrook from West Coast Sleds (who built my nytro) drove 40 miles down the hill today to pick up my sled and take it back, tore it down tonight and will have parts coming tomorrow. thanks sean!
