Not to start a brand war, but Summit or RMK?

Looking for a 1999-03 sled to ride mostly mountain but some trails as well. These two are similarly priced. Is one a better choice than the other? And why (especially would like to hear from those who have had both). Thanks

I would go with a 2002 rmk, I ride doo now but rmk's of that era were great sleds, good power, handled real nice and were fairly reliable, edge chassis seemed a lot nicer than the zx IMO.

Good informative post!! LMAO

From what I rode in the past, I prefer the doo over the Poo for handling. I guess you have to ride and see what feels better to ride.

As for quality, I believe some of the polaris motors had crank issues, not sure which ones or years... Doo also had issues, with the rings flaking, which is an easy fix.

I know the doo's are heartier when you smack a tree... LOL

Yea I got lazy,

The doo ive ridden had some recoil issues not sure if it typical but overall a good sled.

The rmk was soild for the 5 years and 4000 miles we had it to just do maintance stuff on it.

I personally like how the rmk rode over the doo but thats all personal feel anyway I would say if you can ride both and make your pick they are both reliable sleds

buy as new as you can and get the sled that has had the best service. I got started riding the same brand that my buddies had. It saved me from having to start from ground zero. JIMHO

Old School

Pre REV chassis, I'd go RMK.
Some of the early Domestic twins had porosity issues in the lower cases that left voids in the castings leading to crank & bearing failures, can be remedied though.

Ok thanks for all the info. I dont really have the opportunity to ride either significantly, other than a test ride from the seller so thats why I was looking to you guys for some opinions. This will be my first sled purchase so Ive kinda been all over this board trying to narrow down my choices (which are limited due to funds). Im looking for 2, one for me and one for my girlfriend so its looking like a 600 and 700 RMKs. Now I just need to do some lowballing on craigslist and hopefully pick them up ASAP.

i'd look for 02 rmks first year of the edge and very good machines, my bros got an 02 rmk 700 and it will do anything and go anywhere the newer stuff will and outrun most in a drag race.

More of a fear to me is the availability of some parts for the Doo, hard to get a new clutch for the do. As for the RMK I'd go that way, just take a look in the swapmeet, there are tons of stock and aftermarket hoods, bellypans everyrhing you might need in the event of a run in with a tree or a roll down the hill.
