Not enough RPM on 3 but too much on 4

I have an 06 summit X with the slp power package and I am having a bit of an RPM issue. When in the number 3 clicker position on the trail I can hit my 8100 RPM no problem. However, when climbing I am not getting up there. I will waver from 7600 to 8000. So I checked to see what the 1-200 RPM difference was. I put the clutch on number 4 and it makes huge difference from 7900 to 8200. That being said if I hold it down pinned while in number 4 I will get a check engine for overrev and detonation. Anyone have any ideas how to get it right on so I can pin it for extended period of time and only hit 8150?

Thanks

How many miles does your sled have? When was the last time you changed out your clutch springs? Fatigued clutch springs can cause loss of RPM and RPM fluctuation. Another thing to check is buttons, rollers, spring tower bushing. All of these are critical in helping the sled hold RPM. Another thing that is overlooked is to see if the secondary bushing is clean, not binding on the helix.

Could also be a lazy top end. If you have lot's of miles and never changed the top end it could use new rings and pistons.

There are a ton of variables that could cause that. Weights, backshift is not responsive, worn belts, belt too tight or too loose, etc...

I'm not a clutching guru but check those things.

I second the clutching PM's....if I had to guess though since you hold RPM on the trail (less load) but drop off on the hill (more load) that your secondary spring is fatigued and is not providing adequete force on the sheaves to compensate for the added load. The primary should dictate operating RPM while the secondary should sense load conditions and provide the neccesary feedback to the clutches to backshift as needed.....let us know what you find out.
