SPI is a "Re-Boxer" and marketer of parts... can you tell us who the actual mfg of the piston is and if it is cast or forged?

Thx.

Sorry Eric but that is not entirely true...the SPI piston factory in Asia is co-owned/financed by large partners such as Western Power Sports and Marshall Distributing, I believe there are some other businesses involved as well. They do re-badge some other parts they sell that are made in other factories by other companies.

The only forged pistons SPI makes are the Hyperdrives, those are not them. I would suspect that Northstar is using a piston with the WPS part number of 59-9259PS. These are 10-11 M8 pistons used by many of the companies selling a "fix kit" and also the pistons that I use when building motors for customers who prefer a cast piston in their 800CFI as opposed to the forged Wiseco...we can run these at a .0045 clearance instead of .0055+ for their forged counterpart, with less sensitivity to cold starts and overheats.

These SPI pistons in the Northstar are T-Moly series which are hypereutectic cast pistons. More silicon in the aluminum thus less expansion. That sounds like the way to go. Wossners are forged right? Easy to cold seize? etc. Does anyone know if OEM pistons are hypereutectic? Knowing Polaris possible not.

All depends on the design of the piston and the alloy used.

Many OEM auto mfgs use forged now...

In this day and age... typical characteristics of products are no longer what you remember them to be back 10 or 20 years ago... heck even 5 years ago.

Factory pistons are cast...border hypoeutectic and eutectic (8% - 13%) silicon content for the most part.

It all boils down to the right choice of materials IN COMBINATION with the actual design of the piston.

I'm sure that Northstar has made these considerations in the choice of the piston to be used in combination with their kit.
