NorCal Where Are You Going!!??

Silvertip isn't on SW much anymore, is he?

No not really Scott. I miss the days of "Silvertips Playground" thread here in CA/NV on Snowest. I can assure you that he is riding as much as he ever has. If there is no snow he is riding his quad, if there is snow he is on his ski-doo. Man is one of my heros. If I had a dollar for every new guy he rode with that he made look like an out of shape rookie I would be rich $$$ Last weekend outside Bedford I heard words from his mouth I never thought I would...."I think I'm Lost" It is truly an Honor to ride with John as much as I do. Almost 70 and riding more days than anyone I know in the sierras.

Got back yesterday. Got 2 days of riding in and 2 days of skiing.
We went to Smiley Creek Lodge both days. Parked in the lot across the street and had miles of riding from there. Met up with locals both days. They showed us around their playground, super friendly, great group of guys; thank you.

We rode anywhere from 18” to 3 ft of snow. Way more snow than what we have here. Thin in some spots. The locals said there was hardly any, but it was good for us. Got stuck a few times, cut down a couple trees:face-icon-small-who

It was a great trip, 10 hours though. If we didn’t have the families with us, we probably would have just gone straight to wyoming or colorado.

murph where did you go i think I'm headed that way and have never been riding in or where are the best snowparks

We rode out of Dutchman and Wanoga Snowparks. Both are connected to the same trail system/ areas. There are a bunch of Snowparks on the highway between Bend and Bachelor and also on the road that goes between Lapine and the Bend/ Bachelor highway.

Well marked trail system ( for getting your bearings) and well marked wilderness boundaries-- important because it is patrolled and enforced.

Your first day first time I'd head to Wanoga-- big place, lots of parking lots of fellow sledders and enough space for bigger rigs. Dutchman is a great launch point but the parking area is tiny and fills up fast with both sledders and non sledders alike. With a sled deck we were able to weasel in. The locals park up their trailers and then unhook their trucks and park alongside their trailers-- that's how small the lot is.

What is your opinion of Smiley Creek Lodge ? IS there a kitchen in the room, food store places to eat? How much did it cost? Fuel etc ?

we didn’t actually stay at the lodge. we stayed in ketchum in a condo.
the lodge is rustic. small, limited supply general store. old fashion restaurant, we did not eat there. they have several cabins, various sizes and beds. we also did not look at them, but they seem rustic. they have non-ethanol fuel right there, a bit more expensive, we fueled up in town before heading up.

there is nothing around the lodge. it is essentially halfway between ketchum and stanley.

I stayed at the lodge this summer; better off staying in Stanley. However, some the biggest mountains I have ever seen were up there. Awesome single track dirt bike riding.....hope to make it there this winter!
