non-resident snowmobile permit

looking to pick up a couple non-res. snowmo permits.
called a couple dealers in loveland, they don't carry them.

i know i can order online, but i need them in 2 days.
why is it that for a required permit, its so hard to find them? you'd think they'd make it easier to get out of state money into CO..

anyone know of a location between greeley and walden to pick these up? I really didn't expect it to be so hard to find them..

EDIT: FYI, for anyone else looking into this, I just called Ft Collins Motorsports; Nick says they do have/sell non-resident permits.

I had a similar problem back in January. 3 of us from Wisconsin came out. 2 of us ordered online no big deal. The 3rd, a late addition did not have time to order online. We thought it was no big deal until we found no one carried out of state permits!

We had to start comparing where we would be driving to the list in the link below and calling places. After about 10 calls we found Timberline Motorsports in Buena Vista had them in stock and it wasn't too far out of the way.

I definitely thought it would have been easier (like Wyoming where it is all the same permit for in state vs out of state).

Anyway we had a great time in Colorado and will be back for sure! Enjoy the snow and be safe!

Please post back when you find somewhere. A couple of us are headed out towards rabbit ears pass next week and we are in the same boat. We weren't able to get them ordered when we should have so we are struggling trying to find someone who has these around. A few years back we stopped in Vail at the a ranger station (or something like that) and purchased them there but we can not locate anything about that place now. If there is anywhere in Denver that we can stop that would be great.

Dad's convinced Colorado is making it so hard to get the permits so they can stick us with the fine for not having them.

We dropped down to Walden for a weekend. Two guys didn't have stickers yet. Dropped by the courthouse in Walden at 7am on a Sunday and they sold stickers. Buddies said the courthouse is open 24 hours. No idea where they heard this, but they bought stickers and we all rode legally.

Well now that's just dumb. When we purchase our resident permits online we can print out a temporary registration and go riding that day. Why the heck don't they allow non-residents to do the same thing? I just went to the website and it sure makes it sound like that is not an option.

Residents can't register newly purchased sleds online, they can only renew their own existing registrations. Maybe that has something to do with it. I don't know.

Picked one up Saturday for a buddy from Steamboat Lake State Park - easy to get to if you are sledding in the Hahn's Peak area.

After experiencing this firsthand this weekend when we invited a friend down from Wyoming at the last minute then scrambled to get a permit, I am working on getting this changed. I began an email battle with some bureaucrat at State Parks and since her answer sucked, I have requested a person with more political pull than me to pass along my email chain to Mike King who is the Director of the Department of Natural Resources -they oversee Parks and Wildlife. He seems pretty savvy and someone who wants to get things done in a positive way. We'll see if we can't get this changed. We want to be known as a friendly state to come to and anything we can do to make it easier just makes sense.

We already checked that list, every person we have called either has no desire to return a phone call or else they no longer sell out of state permits. It would really help if they updated the list as its been almost a year and a half since that one was updated and I doubt they actually checked anything then.

Cateye, that is awesome to hear! Post back on any updates if you will. At this point we are just going to wing it and see if some places are more help when we stop by. I hope you can get something moving!

I used this, this does NOT mean "non-resident tags". It means "snowmobile registration". Just so thats cleared up.

And for anyone in the northern Front Range;

We did pick up our non-resident tags here with no problem...even tho they don't seem to deal in snowmobiles...

As soon as I told the lady at State Parks that I was forwarding her email chain on to Mike she quit talking to me. I'll let you know when or if I hear anything. The person I forwarded the email to added some comments regarding enforcement and making it easier for non-residents to comply with the law that I hadn't even thought of. So we'll see if we can keep this moving.

I was told Colorado makes the dealers pay for the permits when they pick them up. Most small dealers are taking very few due to the risk of being stuck with unused permits they paid for.

Confirmed - my dealer said that not only do they have to pay for them in advance but State Parks won't mail the darn things to them until the check clears! So the dealers have to wait the two weeks too. He thought there was a process for sending unused stickers back but they just under-order every year. That makes me think that later in the season the stickers are going to get harder to come by.

What I originally said - dumb, dumb, dumb. We'll keep working on fixing this.

Alright so figured I'd post an update here. We were unable to get a single person to return a phone call. But we headed out to rabbit ears anyways today. Stopped at the USDA Forest Service Station at Idaho Springs and bought the permits.

Honestly I find it to be ridiculous that major retailers in Colorado do not sell the permits. I had to buy an ATV permit in Michigan this past summer and was able to do so at Gander Mountain without a single issue. This would be a huge improvement over the system that Colorado currently has.

The system is not good with dealers having to buy tags, not able to return,no online nonres sales, etc. You can buy nonres fishing licences on line and probably at least some hunting licenses.
I might have a friend of a friend that can help. Iwill call her today.

I got an email today from the director of the DNR (Colorado Parks and Wildlife is a division of the Department of Natural Resources) - he said he'll look into it and get back to me. I assume that means he'll be checking with the director of CPW.

Meanwhile parks and wildlife re-designed their website and took off the ability for residents to renew online - now they're going backwards!!! Sheesh!
