Noise level

Anybody know the noise level of the twisted m8 R/G set up. Getting mine installed wednesday, The forest service is hammering people at the trail head.
I am allowed 88db at 4 meters @ 4000 rpm on brake. I am sure shain has this info, Don't want to wait until monday to find out.

Thanks,
J almont

You might want to talk to Shain about tossing on a tunnel dump on it for you. I like his set ups & not trying to bash, but I can't imagine you passing with the side exhaust that he has.

That's been a big factor in deciding who to go with for my new sled, I don't ride in the areas they test OFTEN, but I don't need that ticket, or them telling me to go home that day.

if you got a side dump.. your NOT gonna pass any sound test.. even tunnel dumps are kinda loud when not in deep snow. I would talk to shain about that. Turbo 2 strokes got a bark to them, and when its straight out the side, the sound tester will make you very aware of it.

I had the same type of issue last year with my M7 side exhaust. Not so much the ticket problem but I had to wear a ear plug in my right ear and everyone I rode with had to deal with my hororably loud exhaust. I did some research this fall and decided to give OVS a wack at calming down my exhaust note. I couldn't have been happier with the results. They used there newly designed muffler and did a side dump that is no louder than my buddies rev with a pipe and can. I would say that they were able to decrease the sound level by 1/2. My ears and my buddies can't be happier.

Awesome guys, I will talk with shain and see what he has to say performance wise, and give OVS a call. Like you say who cares about the ticket, the problem is if they can make me load up and not ride.

Thanks again,
J almont

How much for one of these quiet mufflers from OVS? There website has no info on them. Also I hear boondocker makes a quiet side dump muffler? How much green for that?

Hey, Just give Travis from OVS a call.. If he doesn't answer leave a message and he'll get back to ya and get ya fixed up. His side dump muffler works well.

I have the new quiet muffler in my lp m8t it is very quiet compared to a straight tunnel dump. Not sure of the straight up cost, it was only a small upgrade from standard muffler but it is well worth it

I am guessing the quiet exhaust you have heard about BD making is their tunnel dump with a muffler.

I made my twisted a tunnel dump, just cut and weld same size and its not quite, it doesn't bog from powder on the R side anymore, But it rumbles under the tunnel like it has a big block straight piped under there. On the good side tuning is pretty much the same. If not better.

Just thinking out loud here so what do ya think about making a removable test cap/plug/muffler/baffle/etc. Something that would plug into the side dump or any other config to pass the test and then off we go.

I know it isn't a permanent answer but it might get us by for a year or two till the muffler technology catches up.

I have an OVS muffler and couldn't be happier with the quietness, not sure if it would pass such stringent requirements, maybe????

I think stock might barely pass that 16ft test at 88db....heck look at the chart below.......we may have to get an ovs muffler for our lawn mower....LOL

50-65 dB Normal conversation (unless it's about snomo regs)
60-65 dB Laughter
70 dB Vacuum cleaner, hair dryer (if it's not on a sled)
75 dB Dishwasher
78 dB Washing machine
80 dB Garbage disposal, city traffic noise
84 dB Diesel truck
88 dB Subway
85-90 dB Lawnmower
98 dB Farm tractor
100 dB Train, garbage truck
103 dB Jet flyover at 100 feet
110 dB Jackhammer, power saw, symphony orchestra
120 dB Thunderclap, discotheque/boom box
110-125 dB Stereo
110-140 dB Rock concerts
130 dB Jet takeoff, shotgun firing

That's a really good idea!

I am pretty sure it was 250 to have mine done. If it can bolt right up it is cheaper but I had to have mine custom made. They have two mufflers the barrel style and the "can" like mine. Mine is the one that comes on there tial kit so it was made custom to fit my setup. It really has been awsome.
