Noise from clutch side???

2006 900 RMK…most, if not all, recommended updates. Problem started two seasons ago with a “rattle” coming from the clutch side. Very “tinny” didn’t sound like it was coming for the interior of the motor, to me anyway. I have ridden this sled for two seasons with this noise and doesn’t seem to affect performance at all. Still pulls hard!! Noise not there under power. Can ride all day without really noticing, but get back on the trail coming home and it is very noticeable. Cannot hear at an idle, but when the primary starts to engage…there it is. Have had both the primary and the secondary to the shop and the clutches are in good shape. Finally took the whole sled to the shop. Noise is there when the primary starts to engage…not when idling. Took the primary off at the shop and rattle is gone. Put a new primary on and the rattle is back. The guy at the shop has no idea…has never heard of this before. Says his best guess is in the motor because it is noticeable with both my primary and a new one. Going to start tearing into the motor this week…If anybody has an idea of what this could be, please respond. Shop costs of trial and error are adding up quickly. Thanks!!!

The guy at the shop says yes. Tried it with my primary with the belt off and then with a new clutch and same result. I never took the belt off myself.

i would pull the recoil housing and flywheel to see if the inner ring is coming loose from the flywheel it is a known issue on the 9's other than that the only thing i can think of is the washer in the secondary that the shieve width adjustment screw presses on i have heard them rattle but if the secondary is fully closed that shouldn't be it but something to check.

How have belts been holding up over time? Maybe tweaked front motor mount or crossmember? I've had alumimun clutch cover vibrate at that certain resonance @ clutch engagement- but could anything be that easy!

NOISE

CHECK THE BOLT IN CROSS MEMBER BEHIND THE CLUTCHS. BOLTS IN MINE WERE LOOSE MADE A RATTLE.BUT NOT ALL THE TIME

I just had the same problem on a 93 Pro-x 600, had something clinking by the secondary, noticed secondary was'nt closing all the way. Took it apart and cleaned it real good so far noise is gone and all is good. Just a thought?

Six weeks at the shop and counting. Just got a call yesterday saying that they have eliminated most of the posibilities on the outside of the motor. Still no idea what it is. NOW his "best guess" is that it is in the motor. Going to start tearing into it today. I am at a loss here. It really didn't sound like it was coming from inside, but maybe it is?!?!?! The projected cost moving forward is another $1200 over and above what they have in it now. Seems damn expensive.

IMO,

i think your paying way to much for something that may or may not even be an issue.

i would ride it as is and play with it in your free time and fix it yourself. but thats just me.

I hear ya guys...seems insane, but this was supposed to be preventative maintenance. Hoping it was something simple that the shop had seen or heard before because I could not find it. Now it has turned into...I better fix it now before it explodes and costs me even more. $7000 sled, $3000 in mods, $2000 repairs....that is $12000...think they will trade me straight across for a new PRO RMK

I have a 06 900 that has had a rattle in that area sents it was new have never had a problem 1500 miles later still runs like a bat out of Hell!! Don't forget ride it like you stole it!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine has the same rattle...sounds like it is coming from inside the secondary...I can only hear it when I rock the machine from side to side. I don't know anything about clutches or had one apart for that matter. It sounds like a washer (not a loud noise...just a ping sound) hope it is just a washer like someone suggested.

noise from clutch side

Hey all,
Just got back from Halfway, OR. Lots of snow. My 06 had this noise too that would come and go. Same noise as described in this post. Anyway, my primary clutch broke off the crankshaft. I had to be towed out by a 2010 snopro. I was pulling with about 3/4 throttle in heavy powder when the primary clutch liberated itself. After I got it back home I noticed the engine torque link bolt just pulled out, no nut attached. The bolt hole was augered out as if it had been this way for awile. Since the Engine had been allowed to twist under load for awhile I think this is what caused the issue. Not sure if the loose bolt was the noise I heard or not. I'll know after my repairs. As with all mechanical things they usually try to tell you something is wrong before they fail. I didn't listen, and investigate enough.

LATEST FROM THE SHOP...Flywheel needs replaced and motor mounts are shot. Need advice quick from you 900 boys. I believe there are better than factory mounts available. What should I go with. The flywheel from polaris is $450...any ideas where to buy one cheaper. $2000 and counting. I told the shop to keep going and check out the crank. Thats another $1100 with a new clutch included if it is bad!!!
