No Spark!! At a LOSS!!

well...

some of you may know that i had an issue with the wifes 06 rmk 700 on wed...found out the front motor mount bolts busted in the casing..i have compfusion mounts installed..BUT i bought them USED with no center spacer so i made my own..BIG mistake..it wasnt perfectly parallel and caused stress on the bolt and busted it..then the load from the busted one, took out the other bolt, took toa machine shop and he got the bolts out for me...NICE $92 bill right there...:(...luckily i the OEM torque stop and SLP push arm and 115 belt saved the motor..no issues whatsoeve...i didint even know it was busted until i was installing the 09 front end on the sled :o

anyways...to the point of the post...

i was messing with some things while i WAIT for the new spacers that Colin (Compfusion) sent me...(AMAZING CUSTOMER SRVICE BTW!!!)..and i set the motor in the chassis and i KNOW everything is wired up and wiring is routed good...only disconnected the hood, wiring by ECU and injectors..

primed fuel system, all ready to start....

fires up for 2 seconds...dies..pull again, almost starts, pull again..almost starts..pull again...BAM/backfires...pull again..nothing...pulled plugs/replaced...nothing...check spark...nothing...

key is plugged in, tether/kill switch plugged in..coils look good, removed tank again, checked all wiring..all is good..

i work on fri till 5pm...and then had a HUGE sled ride with 10 people on saturday..

i am at a loss...

i have yet to check the stator (ohm)...need to read up on that again, and figure out if its the ECU or if i busted a wire somewhere...

BAD DAY!! :(

Any inputs on Stator/ECU testing...I have yet to do that

Throttle safety switches?

its logical suggestion...

just hard to think its that since i did not remove the throttle cable..left it on throttle bodies when it was removed...i have the FBF cable on it...never touched the handlebars...

but i will not turn down ANY suggestion...doesnt hurt to check the little things like that...

i am out at a buddies now, stressing...sucking down some :beer;:beer;:beer;:beer;:beer; so i wont be with the sled till after 5pm fri..

keep teh suggestions coming and i will check all inputs...

love the 900 forum...lots of insight, and always nice to get input...it seems you can have a really one-tracked mind when you work on your own stuff, lol...

I know you know but make SURE tether button is making contact inside switch!?
As power to coils is interupted.

good point..

like i said, i did not remove the handlebare or anything on them..but i have had a kill switch go bad..

i will unplug both the tether and OEM kill switch, just to make sure...

Throw a NEW set of plugs in just for the hay. I have had plugs do this to me before, also recheck your injector wires. One of my injector connectors looked funny and it turned out the pins had popped out. Hard to tell unless you have the rubber peeled back all the way(Not an easy task). I would unplug them and look in the connectors again.

thanks for the input, but i replaced the plugs..nothing..then i usd a plug wire tester...it has a light will turn on when spark is present...nothing on that as well...

i checked the injectors to make sure they were plugged in coorect, but i did NOT look at the pins inside..but i dont think the injectors would cause a no spark issue..??

like i said..its all worth a shot...

i just hope its something stupid that i may have over looked :rolleyes: but you never know..

i will keep checking on fri after work...
 
Happy NewYears!, sled problems aside. 4yrs. ago my 05 900 lost spark, it didn't show any symptoms like sputtering/backfiring just would not start after last ride. Eventually I found myself checking the stator wires from the plug- in connector behind gas tank and found the crank pos. sensor decided to check out of the game, chapter 13.36 of 05/06 deep snow manual shows some good values for checking with ohm meter. While I really like EFI systems, electrical problems can be really frustrating, only a milli-second from good to no/go! There's a good thread on IQ section about protecting critical components of electrical system, no answers yet, but it is a good question, hopefully factory engineers are reading!
 
Well bud being as you do have two similar sleds I would start swapping the easy stuff such as plug wires, coils or anything you may suspect. Just keep track of what you change out. Good luck to you and as hard as it may be don't get too worked up about it until you can touch the sled. Keep a level head and you may stumble on a solution a lot easier!
 
having any luck finding the problem?

hey bud..no i am at work right now..i can view the forum but cannot log in to post anything (good old airforce security,lol)..

so i am logged in with my phone now i have been reading all i can so i can check it tonight..but honestly have no good leads on hat it could be..hopeing for something i over looked..but i am very careful and usually dont have many issues that stump me..??

basically just test any electrical componet in the ignition system...but i will check the things above and small things before...

any good info on testing the following (if it pertains to no spark of coarse)

-ecu
-stator
-chassis relay
-chassis pwr capacitor
-voltage regulator
-coils

of coarse above is all worst case but wouldnt hurt to learn it for future reference

it will have to wait for another hr or 2..i am working 911 dispatch right now so wont have time to talk with the damn phones blowing up..lol

OK...i have spark now..

tested stator...GOOD
tested chassis capacitor...GOOD
tested chassis relay...GOOD

unplugged kill switch..unplugged key...unpluggded tether...

tested spark..GOOD..

ok..so i "think" i may have found the issue..MAYBE..but i still need to assemble and start it...

but..when i was unplugging the tether..one of the 2 wires that plug in the housing by the key, seemed kinda "loose" (it was taped on there so it wont fall out and have no tether) so i was removing the tape, it fell out..so i am thinking maybe the loose crimp wasnt even in the housing and it was slightly touching the other wire, therefor grounding out..but i a not sure if that would prevent spark since its one wire, but i guess it depends on how the circuit is, with a normally open tether..

i wanted to give an update, before i get more suggestions and go from there...

if not...BRUCE...i might be needing you, lol...

i will report back in an hour or so after i get it together..
 
Hope it runs Guido. I have had a few times my sled didn't start because of the wires from the tether.
 
well...whos the man!!

cant be me cause i missed the tether even though i checked it...damn tape...

did a quick mock up and primed fuel...bam.....she runs like a champ


just need to finish it up amd finish the 09 front end (all tonight) for the ride sat ;)

thanks so much for the help guys...a simple issue can really cause a headache...but the good thing is..i finally got around to learning how to test everything eletrical on the sled (minus the ecu) which i wanted to eventually lol

900 guys rule!!!!
