Newish mountain rider looking for some riding buddies Calgary

I've been looking at the Black Diamond Avalung packs... saw a video of a skier with a helmet cam getting buried by an avalanche and surviving the 4:28 because of it... pretty crazy stuff... definitely taking an avalanche rescue course this fall...

I aswell am looking to take an avy course in Golden this Dec. Let me know if you are interested and we can take it together.

Here is the place I am looking at. http://avalanchesafety.ca/index.php/core/trainingSnowmobile

They also have gear such as backpacks, beacons, probes, shovels, just poke around on the site.

Cheers to snow

Chris

if you are from near calgary, join the snowmobile club. They have a subsidized avalanche course that is put on by Zac's Tracks. The other nice thing is that part of your membership fees goes to protecting our riding areas.

I was looking at taking this one in Canmore on Nov 21-22 for $145.

My neighbour is a certified avalanche rescue responder who's climbed Everest twice, I'll ask him what course he recommends...

the nice thing about the Zac'z Tracks course is that she tailers the information for sledders. There are some stupid things that we do and she points them out. If you take a general course, you may get great information suited for hikers and miss out on the things that are specific to our sport.

Lori is a certified canadian avalanche association instructor who happens to love sledding. If you buy a membership to the Calgary club, you are a member and will be entitled to a great price on a 2 day avy course. The savings in the cost of the course will almost pay for the membership.

I agree with knee deep. If your looking for riding buddies and an avalanche course then go the Calgary club route. Zacs is an awesome course tailored to sledders and Lori is an active member on these forums. I believe her user name is zacs. Do a search and check out her input. I'm sure you will see she knows her stuff.

Next Calgary Snowmobile Club meeting is scheduled for October 13 @ 7:30, Westhill Hurst (upstairs). The club in the past has subsidized the avalanche course for its members. There is also more to the club then just this. We want you to be a member for the following years as well.

Club rides in many areas throughout BC and Alberta.

Here is a tentative club ride schedule:
Dec 12/09 Golden
Jan 23 - 24 Revelstoke
Feb 6 TBA, but likely BC
Feb 26 - 28 ASA Jamboree (Crowsnest)
March 12 Cataract
TBA - Revelstoke for yamafest

Avalanche Course & BC Trail Passes

Yes yes please do!!!

I talked to my neighbour and he knows most of the instructors for the Yamnuska course, recommends it, and says that they cover both snowmobile and skier search techniques etc in the course. I am going to sign up for the Nov 21-22 course at some point this week.

On another topic, I'm still rather unclear on how the whole trail pass thing in BC works. My understanding: I can join one of two BC clubs, but if I go on the other clubs trails, I have to pay because they don't recognize each other. I can also just pay by day for the snowmobile trail passes in the parking lots if I don't get a membership for either BC club. Seems odd that they have people collecting in the parking lots every day during the winter though... and what happens if there is no one collecting when I show up? Do I have to go into town to get the pass then?

Cheers,
-Owen

Hey there Owen,
Before you go booking your coarse, do you think there will be enough snow there and at that time of year to make it worth while.I can see only learning theory at that time and reality in a real inviroment will benifit you more.
It would be pretty hard to learn about the layers if there aren't any.If you take your coarse in mid to late Dec. farther west you will learn more and get hands on experiance as there will be proper conditions to read the snow properly.
I personally wouldn,t put my life in the hands of someone that goes down a hill with just his own weight,I would prefer one that sledded and could show me not only how to read the layers but also where things could be ify where we climb.
If you are serious about taking a coarse I am putting together one for just before Christmas, put on by sledders for sledders. They have four instructors who will take up to eight people each, which means up to 32 people could be certified on that weekend.
Anyone interested in getting the most for their money PM me for more info.

Calgary Riders

I'm always up for a ride. Mostly day trips to Golden or Fernie.
I may be able to sneek away for Weekday trips if the conditions are fantastic.

Hey Guys,I too am fairly new to sledding in the mountains, been out a couple of times.Hoping to head out this weekend if any of you guys are going and wouldn't mind another guy.
