Newish mountain rider looking for some riding buddies Calgary

I moved to Calgary last winter and will be buying a sled in the next few weeks.
I have spent about 40 hours seat time in the mountains and 20 years in the east(when we had snow in the last few).

Looking for some guys(or Girls) that are either like skilled or willing to help a newb mountain rider out.

Cheers

Chris

Sure! always looking for someone to ride with, I have a buddy in Calgary who is often the third wheel (tough when are whole group all has decks), he also is fairly new to mountain riding, keep in touch maybe we can hook up this winter. Cory

Thanks EEEK, getting to know areas with people who know them is key. I have a Tacoma so I will be a lone ranger unless someone has deck space or a sled deck and I will gladly pull.

join the calgary snowmobile club. Most guys ride in the mountains so you will have lots of chances to get out with them.

I usually ride Golden, Quartz and Gorman area's. I work at a dealer in Calgary, and usually post on this forum when our group is heading out. Usually just day trips up and back. We meet in the parking lot at 10 and ride till we're out of fuel.
This season is supposed to be "Elnino", which means heaps of snow. The more you go the better you will get. Get your back strong for the winter:eek:, you'll be shovelling alot, and if you have beer or food, I can dig with the best of them:D:D

This is my 4th season, our group is average but moto-influenced, we like drops, tree's and cornices.
Take an avy course, try hangfire rescue or Zac's tracks, both are great.
Are you looking for a new sled or used ?

I'm usually out in Golden most weekends through the winter. Sucks only riding weekends now, but I guess that's what you get when you take a "real" job in the city.
Let me know any time you're looking to go. We do all kinds of riding and usually get a few snowboard laps in as well.

Calgary riders....

So winter is upon us and I just picked up my new to me sled and am looking forward to a great season. I dont really have any buddies to go riding with but I have had a few people on the forum offer to take a semi-noob out with their group.

I was thinking maybe if people are into it that we could organize a meet and beer drink one night in the next few weeks. I am willing to get things organized if other people are interested. It would be great to meet some fellow sledders.

If you are interested please reply to this thread and we can gauge the interest in doing this.

Don't want to hijack Orion's thread but with the Calgary Club do most of the riders stick to AB like Crowsnest?

I am always up to meeting new riders, usually have a spot on my deck as my buddies keep their sleds in BC. Always up to making a day trip to Golden even when its -25 just to get out of the city. I am by no means a mountain expert, my 4th season wiht mountain riding and always happy to have someone show me a trick or two.

What kinda sled did you get Orion?

New rider from the prairies

Hey all,
I just moved to Calgary from the prairies, been riding since I was 8 but never in the mountains. Buying an 09 Summit next week. Will be looking for a crew to go riding with as I know noone presently. I have an 06 F150 Supercrew long box to haul sleds with if someone has a trailer. Gonna take a rescue course soon and get my beacon, shovel etc.

When does the season typically start in the mountains? (Was end of December back in Manitoba)

Cheers,
-Owen

Hi Owen,
Welcome to Snowest, which in it self is pretty addicting, lots of great people on site with lots of info.
Riding around here can start pretty early, last season my first ride was Oct.25th,year before Oct.29th and the year before that Sept.16th.
I have a serious problem though I think sledding every day of the year riding into June.More months of riding then not.
I am planning my first trip to Revy on Oct 17th if conditions are good.

You'll find it easy to find people to ride with as there are a lot of people like yourself that don't know anyone that rides that will post that they are going and have room,or like myself that tries to go every weekend were as the people that I ride with can't.
I have met a lot of descent people on Snowest as you will too!
I look forward to hooking up as you can't have to many riding buddies.

Cheers,

Thanks for the welcome Dave,
Very happy to meet some riders. I used to ride with pdotsledding from Manitoba (www.pdotsledding.com). Usually served as the camera guy, mechanic, and tow truck though. I prefer powder riding to big air, but I have a feeling that I don't know what deep powder is yet. Should be an excellent year! Keep me posted on your riding, I plan on having all my equipment sorted out by October 23rd. I would definitely be up for some early season riding on the 24th/25th.

Where's the best place to find avalanche gear? (Beacon, backpack, shovel etc) I can't find a good Canadian vendor other than MEC and dealerships. Shipping stuff from the states is very expensive ($50+ for a 3lb backpack apparently).

Cheers, :beer;

For your gear I would just go to any sled shop, they are all pretty much the same in price. If you are buying your sled from a dealer most give 10%off with sled purchase.
If you can wait, the snowmobile show is in Calgary in Dec. and that is the best place for deals and selection.
Hope this helps.

Dave

I wanted to mention MEC (online) had the best prices on beacons last year, haven't looked this year.

Any pack will do. Most guys prefer something 15-30 litres. I run a 24 litre and find it has more than enough room. There is always the BCA and ABS packs as well. Tryin to remember where I saw the best prices on shovels. Last year invested in a great compact shovel. Its an afterthought but I think I would have prefered something with a longer handle after using mine in non emergency situations.

MEC is a greenie outlet and put all of their earnings into taking away our riding areas. Stay away from them.

All of the shops are decent. Also try Dusty at Snowmobile Recyclers. He is a rider and takes a lot of his customers on trips as well. I buy all my aftermarket stuff from him. Has Klim and beacons in stock.

The websites I've found all say the snowmobile show is on November 14-15 at the BMO Center in Calgary. I'll be getting my gear there I think.

I've been looking at the Black Diamond Avalung packs... saw a video of a skier with a helmet cam getting buried by an avalanche and surviving the 4:28 because of it... pretty crazy stuff... definitely taking an avalanche rescue course this fall...
