Newbie Wants to Get into Snowmobiling

Well I have some friends that took me snowmobiling twice this winter, and had a good time. I did spend most of it stuck, but the guys I go with are hard core deep powder guys. What I need from everyone is a sled recommendation, I am 150 lbs. I am looking at the 07 RMK 600, but would go with other makes and models as well. What would be a good sled that is easy to turn in powder and climb hills, but I don't care about having the biggest or baddest sled on the hill. I just need one that will be fun to ride. Thanks guys.

What are you looking to spend? It will be easier for someone to make a better suggestion with that in mind. I'd suggest looking at the M chassis sleds though. They are a terrific powder sled. I love my M8 in the powder, it is so easy to ride. It also climbs hills fairly decent.

Got a like new '08 Nytro for sale. Perfect sled to learn western riding on. Easiest sled in the world to carve on and will stay with just about anything out there. Just gas, turn key and ride. It's under CANNONMAN in swap section. I'll take $5600. You'll have to look a long time to find a better deal. Thanks.

I have a 2008 RMK 600 with a 155" track, that thing goes awesome in the powder. The 600 is a pretty potent engine, you won't make it across the meadow first against a bigger sled, and may have to learn to turn out on those steep hills, but still is a fun sled to ride! Carving with the IQ chassis is very easy, it's light and easy to turn. I like it a lot!

Take a good look at what all your buddies are riding. Buy the most popular sled in your group.

It is alot easier to diagnose probems and easy fixes if you are with a bunch of guys that have lots of experiences with a particular brand.

Also take a good look at your dealer support.

All makes have positive and negatives. If your buddies are hard core, they know what works in your area and which dealer gives the best support.

I have had all brands except CAT. I was pretty reluctant to go CAT in the past because I didn't like the dealer. I now live in a new town in a different part of MT and almost everyone is riding an M8.

I am looking pretty hard at CAT next year. The ones I have ridden with work great, and have not heard of many problems with them.

Hard to beat the 600 IQ engine. Very reliable, can take you where you want to go.

You also have to look at your personality. I have a buddy that bought a decent 800 edge, next thing you know hes adding a little here, and a little there. Now he has a sled that is one of the best Ice dragging sleds in the area. Not his original plans but sleds are endless money pits, and sometimes you can fall in love with them and really put a pounding on the wallet.

That would make you a fine sled.

I just bought same sled with a 685 kit for a back up and got it for 4500 bux.

Another great suggestion is to ride a few of your buddies sleds for a while. This way you can see what the chassie is like and if you like it. Keep in mind that it takes a little getting used to any snowmobile though. I personally would go with an m7 with the 153 track, this way you have pleaunty of power for while you learn.

Good luck

get an 09 600 etec doo. they rip and are light, they get close the the same track speed as an stock 08 m8 and ride a lot better then a cat to. just clutching and a can for the doo 600 and im sure you would be more then happy.

I am in Washington state, so thanks LS1NOVA for the craigslist post, but Minnesota may be a little far for me. The first ride was on a 700 dragon which was sweet, I actually didn't want to give it back. The second day was on a 02 RMk 800. The Dragon was way easier to ride than the 02. Most of my buddies have dragons now, and one on a 08 XP.

If most of the group is on dragons or other polaris then stick with them. It is worth a ton of advil to have friends riding the same stuff. More likely to know how to fix, have spare parts and how to get the sled set up for ya, the knowledge is very handy. Plus you can also see how other mods stack up against yours and make improvements that suit ya better. Look for an 07 or newer 600 or 700 in good shape and you will be happy.

Before you buy, you should try a 503 Hawk. I no I no Just another Hawker popin off. From WA my self the only thing Ive found that does all that stuff and more. The only thing you will get tired of is having to stop. to pull a freinds sled out after he tries to follow you.

LOL:rolleyes:

Seriously though, what everyone has said about getting a sled that your buddies know how to work on. The Dragon 700 was a good sled as well as the M7. There are a couple of pretty nice M7's in the swap for around 4000.
