Newbie Questions.......before the plunge!

When comparing the KTM's you really need to know the model and year of the bikes as the spec's change every year.

For about the last 6-7 years they've been generally consistent with their designations. SX is the MX bike, XCW is the enduro bike, XC is a hard edged enduro bike/slightly softer MX bike, EXC is a street legal version of the XCW. For the last 2-3 years the XC's have been based off the SX bikes, prior to that they were usually based on a similar platform as the XCW. Although there are differences in the gear boxes, about 3 years the XCW's started to get closer to the SX/XC gear boxes. Also if you go back ~7-8yrs, the XCW designation didn't exist as they were EXC's.

This is all for North America, in Europe they don't have the XCW designation and the enduro bikes are called EXC's. And just to confuse it a little more a Six Days version of any bike almost always has different suspension than the non Six Days (i.e. XCW-open cartridge forks, XCW Six Days-4 CS closed cartridge forks).

Best way to compare KTM's is ask on KTMTalk. Someone there will always know the differences.

I posted the gear ratios of the wide and close ratio boxes in another thread. I was curious as where they differ. On both trannies 4th gear is the same and third is about 5% off, where the big difference is in first. First will always be pretty much useless on wide ratio tranny. You can re-gear the TS chain case to hit the wide ratio third gear sweet spot which allows the option of a wide ratio box for summer use if that fits your needs better, which in my case it does. Somebody on here has a 530 EXCR with the Thumper Racing 610 kit on it for sale, that bike is a beast.
