New to the forum/area/sport...

I think the Nytro is great, my friends and I have bought nine new yamaha this year between us, Nytros and Phazers. None of the Yamahas' we have bought have had any issues that kept us from riding. Four of our Nytros are turboed and they are awesome. I think the Nytro is a great entry sled because it is so easy to ride, yeah it weighs more, who cares, it does not feel heavy when riding it. If you get bored with a 130 horsepower in a couple of years, put a turbo on it and take it to 250 to 300 horse, and still maintain a higher level of reliabilty than the other companys. Not to mention the daily operating cost are less than half of what my two strokes used to be, no more burning belts and oil. I don't know maybe I am biased, I guess I have just been burnt by the other companys too many times.

Welcome to the greatland, you have some excellent choices.
I would probably rank them in the following order
1. 08 M8 SnoPro, the new skid is a big improvement.
2. 08 800 Dragon, they just flat rip
3. 08 Nytro MTX would be a great first sled, lots of room to lighten up and add power in the future.

I ranked them but honestly you can't go wrong with any of them they are all great sleds that will put a big **** eatin grin on your face at the end of the day.

For a new guy until you build up that group of buddies who like to and know how to work on sleds new is probably a good thing. You will find that almost no one rides a stock sled after the first couple of years but thats because there is always room for improvement.

Welcome, enjoy all that AK has to offer. Lotsa great peeps on here that are willing to help ya out. Lotsa great info.

Welcome

Ya, what most of these peeps said. I'd say to stay in the 700 class for now, heck they are all in the 135 to 140 hp class anyways. New used sleds are good and a lot of the dealers still have new sleds left over from last year = new sled warranty and less cost initially. Get GOOD riding gear (Klim, Riema, ect) don't scrimp to save a buck. And NO MODULAR Helmets (they are outlaw'd here...lol.)
Basically they are all good sleds, pick your color and rip it up.:D:beer;:beer;

I work in Prudhoe as well, are you in the wells group, or drilling, or...

Thanks for all the feedback guys! It'll be a tough choice but I'm pretty excited about getting out there.

Cool, I'm a Facility Engineer so I'm in the surface group.

btw...I called around to the Yamaha dealers today and here's what I came up with on the Nytro. Anchorage has one w/reverse for 9600. Eagle River is out and Alaska House up in Big Lake has both the standard and anniversary edition, 9695 & 9840. I really like the red and black but that's basically all you get that's diff on the anniv isn't it?

Powersports in Anchorage "might" have one Dragon 800 for $10,700.

marita/ powersports are a good dealer....is the d8 a 163 or a 155? I would take the 163 but I am a powder rider...sounds like you are headed for the nitro..good buy as well..

The yamaha nytro anniversary model is nothing but the color, no fancy options, just color. Makes no sense to spend the extra 300 unless you really want or like red and white, but there is alot less of them around.

Whatever way you go you will have a blast.
I will advise you however if your looking into a polaris go to eagle river polaris and stay away from marita/powersports. Wife worked there for quite a few years and they are shady business people to say the least, not to mention their tech. department. My.02

To the guy that posted about his buddies Nitro still broken. What is broken on it and who is his dealer ? I just cant see him waiting all winter for one part. Also I have yet to hear about any real problems with any of the Yamaha snowmobile line up. Fact is they are by FAR the most reliable sleds out there. As for weight, they are a bit heavy but they also come standard with e-start and reverse, so figure 25 lbs alone for the e start. Other brands never list the weight of an option in their dry weight. Our Phazer is 515 lbs dry but I can tell you when riding it, it feels much lighter than my 480 lbs rev. I think the only time you will notice the weight is when your stuck or have to pick it up for some reason.

Ya, i know, the ones i did trust or would even consider touching my sled went to eagle river. Marita is slowly falling apart.

Welcome to Ak, If you're looking for reliability get a Yamaha, If I would buy another two stroke it would be a Polaris RMK or the 600 replica racer(there is one for sale here at Polaris Junction in Delta if anyone is looking). The 07 and older revs are great too.

How much?? And a phone #. Will be in the area next month...

I don't know how much, I'm guessing msrp. The number to Polaris Junction in Delta is (907) 895-2030. They have an 600 IQ RR that some one had ordered and never picked up. I was picking up some yamalube and saw it in the showroom. If I had not got the Nytro I would be looking real hard at that RR.

Hey man welcome to Alaska, hope your enjoying your time on the slope. There are a lot of new sleds that are awesome, from every manufacture. I am partial to my 08 6, and 700 RMKs that are non dragon. Dont underestimate the poo 600, and upgrading after a year with a big bore kit will get lots of power and still have great reliability. Remember if you get a big power sled off that bat like the 800 dragon or 800XP it may put you into places you shouldnt be, and also may make things to easy:). I would keep away from used sleds, that way you can have a good warranty until you learn your way around the new sled. Also I have seen alot of sleds bought by new riders that were used, and then the sled goes tits up right away. I would take a look at.
1. 08 600 RMK 155 w/CFI
2. 08 700 RMK 155
3. 07-08 REV800 Summit
4. 08 Yamaha Nytro MTX
5. M8 SnoPro
Find a dealer that you think will treat you good also, that is key!!!

hey welcome to AK. you will love it. If your set on the Yami go with the nitro. might look at the 600 rmk with 155, lighter, you WILL apprieciate the less weight when stuck(if you don't get stuck your not riding). I wouldn't worry about getting anything bigger if you haven't ridden sleds in the past these new 600s have plenty of power for starting out(or most riding for that matter) and can be modified easily to boost hp as needed. unless its a ego thing than look for a 1000cc min.;) just kiddin!!

have fun!
