New to snowmobiles and new to me 2006 800 summit

I recently moved to Utah and for most my life i lived in Arizona. I bought a 2006 summit 800 with 5000 miles. Originally the miles scared me off but I'm friends with and work with the guy i bought it from and after looking at the sled i found this thing was well taken care of. I've raced motocross for 20 years and have learned with bikes that the year/miles/hours doesn't reflect its condition compared to how it was cared for. The previous owner used it for ski patrol and has good records of everything (belts/plugs/top ends) then my friend bought it and used it for ice fishing for a season. So my questions

What preseason maintenance should I do ?
Compression is good but hours on top end are unknown (only a date)
Should i throw a top end in it just for piece of mind? single or dual rings?
What other things should i know before the snow gets here

Nice Sled

Have the same one (and a few others). Sounds like it's had a pretty easy life and based on mine (which had 8500 miles before any issues), I'd run it. Although others will say the crank needs to be checked or bearings greased, I feel you should be good for a while. Two things you should do, first clean the RAVE valves and secondly, install a new throttle cable. Many times the cable that controls the oil injection starts to fray and you will be down quickly without oil (oil and throttle cable are one assembly).
Good luck and hope you enjoy sledding.

Top End

Agreed on the top end. If you use the recommended OEM pistons and rings get the Ski Doo circlip installer. As a motocross guy I learned that the doo clips are way more difficult to insert than any previous wrist pin clip I had worked with!

Now the argument begins as to pistons. You will get good service from OEM, Woosner (sp?) and Wiseco. RKT drop in kits are a good option. The rest have mixed results at best.

I still have my 06 that i bought new, get rid of the oil pump and go premix, at around 4000 mine quit and had to do a complete rebuild, great sled but takes a while to get use to the handling , as far as pistons , go with what u can afford,as long as your not modding the motor ,they all do what there suppose to do
