New to Sleds Need Help

Experience is everything. That is why I was leaning toward 700 with a 144. I figured I might get use to the power quickly, but I would appreciate the lighter weight to throw around and gain technique rather than rely on power alone.

Oh yeah, the track question. If I were to extend my track what parts would I need and about how much would the average cost be?

The best deal right now for long tracking that 144" polaris is to take it to a 159" Its the exact same track as the 144'' just longer so u dont have to change anything. Just pull one track and put on the other and put on rail extentions and a tunnel extention.

My guess would be about...
Track $430
Rail extentions $90
Tunnel extention $80

So about $600 Not bad but ur on a tight budget. Plus u could get some money for the 144"

Thanks, you have helped me feel better about my decision. I am going with the Doo. I think I am getting a good deal on it also $2000 guy says it only has 3500 miles on it and only mods are a pipe and a can. Thanks for all the help!

Thats an awesome deal! That will be a perfect learners sled and a really good friends sled. Hey ride it for a year or two and look for an 800 159-162" that will take u anywhere u want to go. My 700 is going to be a friends sled as soon as i get my IQR 700 Turbo! Just remember the throttle is ur friend! Glad i could help, glad to give my opinion to any one that wants to hear it.

Looks like you got some good advice... and IMO made a good call on the DOO. Have ridden both the 700x151" and 800x151", good sleds. The '02 "should" already be set up for elevation since its local? I would definently try to schedule to get it into a shop before you buy... have a mechanic once over it (especially compression check) if you can convince the owner (even have him meet you at the shop?) As far as long-tracking it... pretty simple job, but expect a weekend while you figure things out. Checking the "swapmeet" on SnoWest as well as KSL.com classifieds (your from Utah?) can net you a cheaper-than-new track and the rest if your lucky. Do a yearly service every fall on your clutches/carbs keep up your belt/plugs you'll be good. Congrats!

P.S. Wont be long before your ditchin' the ski buddies for sledders!;):D

Well, I finally threw down today. I am always worried if I got a good deal or not. I guess I realize that a used sled is somewhat of a crap shoot with my limited knowledge and I rely on honesty from the seller.

I bought a 2002 Ski Doo Summit 800 151 wide track. I spoke with the guy for a while and checked out the compression (can't remember the number had a few beers to celebrate but it was good). 3000 miles (his guess) and 150 on new top end and clutch. Ceramic barrings (I believe in the clutch- sorry I need to learn about snowmobile motors) gas shocks all around, Botseen Reeds, and a few other, simmons skis, and a few other mods that I forgot. Raised handlebars (good height for me- I am 6'2"). He was honest and told me he crashed it and showed me all the spots he fixed. He said he has a friend at a shop that does the work for him and if I need parts can get them for cost plus 10%. I am hoping he is an honest guy. Basically the thing has been ridden- I can tell, but the engine is what he keeps top. This is just like my first bike that I bought (ugly, but strong strong engine) I am hoping I have an ugly machine with a strong engine. It is actually not that ugly, just used, but I am ok with that because of how the engine looked. He may not have armoralled the seat, but he dialed the engine.

I got it for 1700 because he was motivated. I am happy and can't wait to ride. I went to but my trailer right after and the guy had just sold the trailer. Anyone have a trailer for 400 or less?:D The guy I bought from is nice enough to store the sled in his garage until I find a trailer. Good guy and I trust him. I think I got a used sled with a strong engine. I am stoked and I have an 800!!!

Who wants to ride with a rook? I am a wildland firefighter and have the winter off. Any day that is good for you is good for me. I am in Ogden, Utah and I will travel.

Congrats on the new sled, it sounds like you made a good choice, makes more sense to buy one with all you need instead of upgrading to get what you want.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I was looking at it. It is set up perfect. The other one I was looking at looked good, but I would have put money into it right away. Thanks to everyone for all the help. :beer;

Sounds good, only thing that comes to mine are check the chaincase and I would be leery if it has those flakey rings. I wonder what he put in for a top end?

Gratz
