New To Me 900

O.K. Boys,
I'm getting a little bored with my M8 and since there is no new cat chassis, I decided to purchase a 900 just for giggles.

So yesterday I picked up an 05 166 aniv edition that has a blown motor.

I tore it apart this morning and found the rod bearing on the mag side siezed, and the rod bearing on the pto side loose. I'm going to pull the motor this afternoon split it if I can find a way to pull the

Anyway, the guy I bought it from says he uses this forum, or used to use this forum so maybe you all know the sled.

Blue 166, hood looks brand new, Seat looks new, straight tunnel, Holz spindles, brand new shocks in the rear skid, brand new top end with 18 miles on it and an $1800 reciept for the work done less than a year ago, SLP head, slp pipe, aftermarket intake, radiator delete, left throttle, slp skis, extra set of a-arms, extra secondary, 2 belts, cover.

My primary sled is a 430# m8 162 ported/piped, but I'm looking forward seeing how this tank handles the deep stuff.

The beast leaned out is what it did,,, WHY ?

I use mine For Michigan trail... Man i love the rumble,, i love the mass, frickin beast ! I love the looks when people are pulled over smookin cigars and im passin by and i lift the ski's... No one comes by me on the like cause no one likes to loose... I do get some that sway by lookin to line up,, but then see 900 and fade to a new direction.

Enough of me bragging.. 18 miles on a fresh top end,, and then rod bearings lockup,,,,, that's scarry,,,, i'd wanna know why.... The beast leaned out is what it did,,, WHY ?

A local dealer.
I was reading through the paperwork and it says they replaced the mag side intake boot due to cracks. This wasn't done and it is cracked through.

I see some small hairline cracks in the bottom of the case. There are 2 small drain screws and the hairlines are around the 1 screw, the case looks to be bulging to a small degree.

I'm trying to split the case, but don't have the stator pulled, I'm guessing I need to pull the stator before I split as it won't seperate on that end???

Wecome to the Dark Side

05 900 166 Aniv with everything.

Once you get your 9 tuned up you will be scaring Women Children and Artic Cat riders for miles.

Didn't notice what part of the Country are you in ???

I'm in NV, but on the border of CA in Lake Tahoe.

I split the case this morning, and the lower half has stress cracks so it is trash.

I need a lower or matched set out of an 05.
When the dealer did the rebuild, I figure he didn't clean the pipe out and the motor sucked something back through. 1 piston is scuffed, but the cyl looks brand new. The other piston/cyl is like new. The head is like new, but there was a debris sitting on top of the piston when I pulled the head.

My search is on for a bottom case, does anybody know if the 06 bottom is the same as an 05?

You cannot get just a bottom case half and mate that to your top half... they are bored together when made.

You really need a new crankcase... Used ones are not worth buying IMO... Unless you want to throw good money out the window. About $395 with a good discount.

Confirm that you have 2006 pistons... the new ones are all 2006 and you cant mix/match them with 2005's (which are prone to breakage)

Also, you will need to SUPER carefully check the crank for bearing issues, phase, and runout.

Look for the thread "Crankin your 900"

Might check out babbittsonline. There is an upgraded crank kit that comes with all new seals, gaskets, larger pto end crank, new belt and new clutch, clutch bolt all for around 880.00 then order the cases at the same time.
Another option is to buy an engine off ebay seems to be a couple on there most of the time.
I see this guy has 2 sleds he's parting out. Not sure how close your are to him but that might be an option. Don't get the 06 900 engine for your 05 though it has an extra set of injectors and they won't clear the steering post from what I heard.

I called that guy, he doesn't have motors and hardly speaks English.

I see another 05 motor on ebay, and I emailed the guy a couple of questions about it but haven't gotten a response so. I see a few 06 motors but understand that I will have to get a new ecu and wiring?

06 in an 05.... wiring, ECU, steering post and steering post mount, rider select mech off an 06 (or an 06 RS delete), oil bottle, pipe, y-pipe... and other stuff.

Make sure you know what you are getting... many 900 motors for sale... many of them are in poor shape. Know what you are buying, know the runout on the crank and the history of the motor.

99.99% of 900's with broken cranks have bad cases.

Just my 2 cents.

just another input on the link to ebya above..

i talked to that guy a few months ago, he was gonna part the sleds out..and i saw a FNI intake on one of the sled...i offered him a price for it...he accepted,i paid... i waited 2 weeks nothing...then he refunded my money said he wants more money or no sale...

then he started asking how to take the clutch off the 900...i told him, and this is what he told me..

---i took the clutch bolt out and hit the backside of the clutch a few times with a rubber hammer, then a copper hammer...it wouldnt come off...---

i was blown away...you can kiss that case ring good bye...that motor wont be running long..

this is stuff you have to exspect from guys that dont know anything about sleds and assume they dont take care of things like they need..

IMO...buy new case/crank as stated above...really cant beat the price...

give Indydan a call, he might have a deal for you as well...great guy!!

I just inspected the pistons to see if it was the updated 06. They are stamped Elko. It's funny as 1 piston is scored all the way down and the top is beat up, however the head looks brand new, and the cyl looks brand new.

I found the culprit.

There was a large piece of piston skirt stuck in the reed.
The pistons I pulled out are whole, so this was left in by the dealer.

The rebuild was 11/25/09 and it siezed after 18 miles.

I'll call the guy I bought the sled from and see if he wants to pursue it, maybe we can work something out.

You should only run the OEM Polaris 06 pistons most aftermarket are duplicates of the 05 pistons from what I heard. Sounds like since you've pulled it and have it torn down you will be better off going through IndyDan or Babbittsonline if the dealer doesn't help that is.

Does Elko make the pistons for polaris? The broken skirt is identical to the skirt on the good pistons.

900

Elko was making the pistons not sure if they still do.So who was the dealer are they out of Truckee? The Truckee dealer has a sloppy at best service department and they charge for parts they dont install.

There are 2 dealers in the area, so it was either/or. I want to see what type of response I get before I disclose who it is.

I talked to the original owner of the sled Friday afternoon, and he was quite upset. I'm going to let him pursue it first and see what he can come up with. He said that the motor never siezed before the top rebuild, that it just overheated. The piece I pulled out of the reed is absolutly a chunk of the piston skirt. My existing pistons are both whole. The reed that it was stuck in looks to be in great shape, and I don't see how the piece of piston could have lodged itself into the petal without causing damage.

05-06 pistons

Here is a pic of 05-06 stock 900 pistons. 06-left, 05-right.

Also depending on what you do for an engine or parts. I just upgraded to a Torque Master crank. Have the original one in my shop. Nothing wrong with it, has about 1800 miles on it. Was going to be listing it on Ebay soon.
