New to me 02 Summit 800

I am new to sleds and I just bought an 02 800 highmark X. It has 2200 miles on it and I am just wondering what the problem areas are to watch for and what upgrades it needs to make it perform better. Thanks for the help, it looks like there is a lot of info on here.

Well, the first things I would do is a compression check, unless the motor has been freshened lately. Make sure your clutches are in good operating condition i.e. free of belt dust and other crud that can accumulate in them. Grease up the suspension components, and the bearing under the driven clutch. Check gear case oil and chain tension. I usually go finger tight and then back it off just a tad.

If your into tinkering at all, do a search on here for lighting up the ZX chassis. You can also find a lot of used goodies in the swapmeet section. If your a tall person you might want to look into a bar riser. It makes a real nice difference if your going out to the mountains (your back will thank you).

If you ever want to upgrade that engine I would recommend an RKT 827 or there 800 drop in kit. They have good reliability. I'm running the 827 in my ZX and it puts a grin on my face every time I hit the throttle.

Other than that have fun. They are great sleds considering there age.

HO?

Is it an HO or non HO...if not get a set of reed spacers that helps the bottom end...when the 800's get a lot of miles they have had pto crank bearing problems... thats all i can help with good luck and enjoy!!

Watch the rings for signs of pitting and loss of compression, I ran Wiseco dual ring pistons with good results before going to BJ's 840HO kit.
Ditch the 02 carbs with the non-hooded needle jets, non-adjustable needles and lean midrange for a set of 03 carbs. Think CPI had a carb kit to fix the 02, had mine done by Xtreme Perf. in CO., but don't think they offer the service anymore.
As stated before, your'e probably destined to have a crank bearing go out, my 02 lasted a good long time, others weren't so lucky.
Light-weight can (got one if you're intested), bar riser w/ throttle cable extension, Boss Hi-rise seat, different skis, light-weight hood, RKT head helps power, reed spacers pull the reeds out of the intake tract.

How do I know if it is an HO or not? Also does that affect on whether or not the crank bearings are known to go bad. And is there any way to check the bearings without opening the case. Thanks for the help.

no

You can not check bearings with out breaking the case...Redsledhead is correct but a few of the hos did make it into public sleds in later 02 models...as a test i have heard?? but who knows for sure other than doo.. need to get the head and cyl. #'s to make sure but most hos were stock with reed spacers...just give it hell and dont stress have a good time...and when the cash flow is better than rebuild it from top to bottom then you know what you have.

Don't know bout later sleds getting an HO motor, do know the HO pulled harder than the 02 non-HO.

I have another question has anyone had anything to do with crank shop twin pipes. A friend has them on his and they seem to add more snap. I have been looking for a set, but I am not sure if they are worth it and if I will have to rejet or adjust the clutch if I add them. Thanks

I would second the motion to check you carb boots, went to check my pilot jets this year and they pretty much ripped off when I took off the carbs. Also I installed a set of V Force 3 reeds, it really woke up the bottom end.
