New sled for a big guy

With the hold over market and the summer market closely approaching I am tempted all too much to sell the old skidoo summit and move up. I am 28 years young 6'1 and 290lb in street clothes and am looking at either a 06-08 apex mountain or a nytro. I am looking for experience and opinions from other "big fellas" as to which one they prefer and why. I have found a nytro in my area for about $6500 and a nice apex can be had for about the same money or less. We ride the black hills (5500-7000') and the snowies (9500-11000') and like to boondock and pound untouched logging roads and do some climbing when we find it. I would like to add nitrous to either sled to make a little more exciting. I currently ride a 03 summit 800ho (old zx chassis) and it does ok for the most part. Unfortunately a turbo is not in the future so please keep that in mind. Thanks and let the ideas flow.

There both great sleds ya cant go wrong with either but I'M partial to the apex with a few lightweight mods and Simmons gen 2 ski's its hard to beat Ive seen new in the crate apexs for 6500

I am 6'2" 335lbs and I love my Impulse Nytro. I have ridden every other sled out there and hands down it is the best fit.

No offense to fellla that suggested the M1000 but I have riden a couple M8's and we use to own an M6 and I am not that excited to own one, I would rather ride yamaha.

I am not a big guy but I would think the apex would be a better fit. I am sure the Nytro is easier to throw around but I don't think there is enough power or track for a 290 # guy. Remember, he said it will not get a turbo so we are talking stock power. or get a used RX-1 with a turbo and you will be good to go.

Just my .02

I disagree, politely (if I can!). I'm no small guy at 235, and my stock Nytro power is plenty to get me where I need to go. I've added TS skid and a different track with updated clutching....sure, it won't go 100mph, but it's got enough grunt and torque to get me wherever I need to go. I honestly don't think another 55 #'s of body weight is going to change the power significantly. I would suggest going to a 162 track, though.

I would go with the Apex.

They are coming down in cost and with a 15 wide track and a slight diet they are great. I don't like the 16 wide myself that is the biggest hindrance on the apex in hard-pack. A light skid and exhaust are great additions to the sled and make it as light as the Nytro and bring the handling in line with the Nytro as well. The 4 Cylinder power and smoothness is addictive.

I went with Apex, stock it did OK at best. I am 6'7" and 285

Now I have done the following, Camo etx 16-174-2.5, most every weight loss product there is (timbersled, boss, excell, battery, etc, -80+ lbs) simmons gen2, outlaw set up the clutches and a 19/42 gear set, and let me tell ya for boondocking and powder it is a night and day difference, I am now trying a 18/43 gear set as the lower gears worked wonders.
The sled now does so well I am really thinking that maybe boost is not needed as the pump gas, 4 rides a weeks is pretty darn nice with no worries.

Oh, whatever you do GET RID of that maverick track, it is a POS......

Simmons gen 2 skis, float plate and camo 162-2.5 or powerclaw 162 track with a small gear reduction and u are good to go.......imho

Maybe try a groomer? Haha, jk.

Know a few bigger guys that have been running the Apex and no problems, good luck!

Its good to see someone has jokes.

I would really like to find a guy that had an apex that went to a nytro and the differences they found. In size and weight the two look quite a bit different, not to mention power and track in stock form. thanks again

blew up my cat this week and rented a nytro im 6'1" 220 and had to rent a nytro for a day. damn nice sled smooth power and seemed to have plenty of it. amazingly easy to throw around.

I just finished building an 06 apex with the MCX standard turbo(290hp) and a kmod rear skid for a guy who is 6'4" and 320lbs. I rode the sled myself im 175lbs and it was imo as good as it gets. He picked the sled up last sunday and has called me everyday since telling me how much he loves it. What blew me away was how a fairly heavy sled turns into being so light and nimble with some added horse power, granted with the kmod suspension and drop brackets you shed about 14lbs and it rides like a caddy. Hats off to mcx though what a sweet *** ride

Save your money and get an RX-1 and then do the Kachess mods to make it fit you. I'm just about finished with the rider forward kit and I tell you, at 6'7" it's a must-have. When I stand up it's so much more natural now since I don't have to bend over at the waist or crouch down to hold on to the bars.

Anyway, my $0.021.
