new sled blown up

guys,
I just bought a new 2010 M8. Went riding today and at 5.8 miles the sled blew the motor. After further inspection it appears the water pump was not working properly. I called the dealership and they said they would rebuild the motor. My though is I want a new motor or a new sled, not a rebuilt motor. Any have any thoughts or similiar problems. what would you want?

Thanks for any input.

Gary a dissapointed owner:boom:

I would want to know how much damage was done to the motor. Then, discuss options with your dealer, let then know you expect them to rebuild the motor to 'better than new' condition and go with their recommendation. The new sled is unrealistic and there would be no more guarantees with a brand new motor than the one you have now.

thanks guys for the input. I agree I should not get a new sled. I am just scared to see the results of their rebuild. My experience with rebuilds is they are not very reliable down the road. Thanks

Gary

A qualified mechanic will rebuild your engine good as new . You have warranty anyway . I wouldn't worry about it .

Your dealer might not have much choice,as AC will tell them what to do.Mine was rebuilt with only 180 Km on it,it's all good now.Good Luck.

I hear ya on the new sled, but not going to happen. defineately would push for a new engine, but that probably isn't going to happen either.

Warranty states that repair or replace, manufactures discretion.

I burnt my engine on 900 cat secondary to a broken cooler, all the coolant drained out, I ended up just doing a top end rebuild, I even managed to salvage the cylinders.

That's probably what you will get. It'll be as good new and you'll still have the warranty, so it's all good. I know how ya feel though.

Let us know what happens.

New sled???

Why a new sled? I'm currious. I'd be concerned about a rebuild if the water pump was the cause of the failure but the rest of the sled is ok, right?

blown up

Guys thanks for all the inputs.
I bought the sled in Western, MT, this is not my local dealership. My local dealership did not have a 10 m8. My local dealer said the result of the blown engine was more than likely caused by the other dealer not bleeding the water pump and lines enough.
There was air in the lines and this caused the pump failure. At 5.3 miles the sled bogged and died never to start again. I should have seen the high temp light earlier and I may have saved the motor, but I was standing getting used to my new sled and I figured I did not have to babysit the gauges at 5 miles on the sled.
Thats the story and I am hopping for a new motor as I bought a new sled with a new motor not a rebuilt. I know I have warrenty to cover anything down the road but it really sucks to ruin 4-5 day sledding trips with a breakdown.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine,"Speeedracer"09-M/8, Sled had 4 miles on it and took a dump. They repaired his original engine and it was fine !! >>>>.

Real rare

But some time stuff happens. Cat might just send out a new engine it is what ever his cat tech thinks is best. It is also typical for one dealer to blame another for not doing this or that and that is BS. They are just pissed because you did not buy locally. If you have a air bubble it will not take the pump out. In fact it is real strange that it did not just shut down. What damage did it do?

Any way get it fixed and enjoy you could have bought brand X this is a typical post over there and this is the first I have heard of this in the cat section.

guys,
i will update everyone later this week after the mechanic tears into the engine. The motor will not turn over.

You guys are all nicer than I - I would settle for nothing less than a new sled. I did not pay the over-priced 10k + price tag to have a rebuilt motor at 5 miles. Accountability - it's nothing to the manufacturer to give you a new sled (or at least motor) and sell the rebuilt one to the next sucker ! They'll get close to full price for it anyways. I learned the hard way though on a '96 Ford powerstroke !

Exact thing happened to a buddy here at work.. Brand new M8 got a couple kms up trail first ride of the season, water pump season smoked the motor. They got him a new motor took almost 2 months but they replaced it..

I guess it really comes down to how fast is your dealer going to get you back on the snow. If you have to wait for 2 months for an engine then you should be entitled to a different machine. Some of the dealers here will actually pull parts off floor models just to keep their customers happy. That kind of service goes a LONG way.

blown engine

Guys,
I wanted to update everyone one the fix. My dealer spoke to cat at it appears the crank was not properly lubed when it was installed. They gave me 2 options, 1 repair engine so I could possibly finish the season, 2 new engine. I chose the new engine, it will arrive in July so I wil be ready for next year. Thanks Cat and my Billings, MT dealership for the fast service and options. Thanks everyone for the input and see you all next year on the mountain.

That's what my dealer did. My hand warmer switches were loose and he took parts off one of the sleds on the showroom. Having a good dealer is always nice.
