New shovel suggestions?

What to look for in a shovel:

Remember, if someone is buried 3' down, you will need to move on average 1500- 2000 pounds of snow to uncover them.

Look for a large aluminum blade, extendable handle, tempered blade or shaft extending into the blade. D grips are nice, but they take up more room in packs and may not fit.

Many riders carry too small of a shovel. If you would not consider shoveling your driveway with it, why would you consider using it to dig for someone who's life depended on it?

In my opinion the Balck Diamond Deploy is not adequate to dig down 3' since it does not have an extendable shaft. They make the Transfer 7 shovel which is better. Other favorites include the Backcountry Access Companion Shovel and Voile with saw. Mike Duffy

Think of where you buy your shovel, do you want to support snowmobiling or buy from a retailer who is against motorized use in the backcountry.

I get to try out lots of different shovels and my personal favorite is the Black Diamond Transfer 7.

well... thanks for the poke in the eye snowww1. i got a gift card from a liberal family member. and while we are on the topic of supporting snowmobile friendly companys... maybe none of us should buy black diamond because they support the Conservation Alliance who gives tons of money away to all sorts of anti-motorized rec groups. including sierra club... so before you go throwing stones do some research. i know REI had an agenda that is against anything that isnt human powered. but then how many times do we all go watch a movie that has some famous actor/actress that supports the same groups as REI?
i have the black diamond transfer and it is sturdy, lightwieght, extendable and well priced. lets hope i dont ever have to dig anyone out but feel confident in the shovel if i had to.

Daner,
Sorry, didn't intend to poke you in the eye. My intention was to let people know that some retailers do not support motorized use. I should have worded it differently. I am aware of what Black Diamond supports, but did not want to open that can of worms. I have found that if the company does not have a photo of a snowmobile on their website, they don't support snowmobiling. It would be great to put a list together of the companies that do not support snowmobiling. Mike Duffy

As for where to buy gear, Mike's not COMPLETELY right...
REI is a great place to buy gear, as long as it's something that you are going to return at least a few times!!

I buy boots & gloves from them, and every year I bring them back & get new ones (R.eturn E.xchange I.nc guarantee 100% satisfaction, I was only about 87% happy).

Want avy gear, snowbigdeal on here is a great guy & has great prices, check him out.
