Voile shovel.
Alum Construction, good solid handle, the biggest head you can stand.
I was trying for multipurpose items in my pack and opted for the volle with the saw.
Its very nice, some have said they dont fit thier backpack though.
I bought a pair a few years back on e-bay. $40 all amum, whatever works

We sell the Voile shovels and HMK! Either way you can't go wrong.
Personally I use a Voile but not for any other reason than it was available to me when I was in the market.
Differences:
HMK has a ice pic on the end of the handle
Voile has more options

Best Shovel I've ever had is a Black Diamond Deploy. All Aluminum, bout as easy to compact or take out of your bag as possible. Works great because while others are putting a shovel together i just reach on my back its ready. Another plus is you don't have to leave the handle up so that it tags the back of your helmet or snags on a limb when your doing tree riding....
Agree the Black diamond is the best shovel out there. The handle that slides into the blade works great and deploys much faster. It digs well also. I have a voile,hmk and the black diamond is much better. If for nothing else the ease of storage and deployment
I have a HMK with an extendable handle and a saw in it. The saw works great (sawsal blade) I just have not moded it so you can replace the blades when you bend them. Works great and you do not have to bend over

your buddy wants you to buy the shovel with the longest handle & the biggest grain scoop you can buy.
A "D" handle is the best for big digs, if you spend some time beating on yourself digging you'll notice a difference.

Those Black Diamond's look sweet. I think I may have to pick one up for the season.

I would highly recommend the Black Diamond deploy. I really enjoy my shovel and the ease of storage and its strength. I ride with an HMK backpack and i just reach back and grab it quick as ever. In cases of avalanche's when your in hurry I don't know if you could find a quicker shovel to pull out.
i have my voile setup in my bag so I can just grab it like a sword and daw it out.. makes for a quick dig and deploy, i keep it in the shovel pouch on the back of my bag with the handle in it, so im always ready, and it sorta acts like a back brace.
voile shovels, i have used ones for 4 years along with others in the group and nobody has a single issue and i beat the crap out of mine, i get stuck a LOT!
